2011 Season - Vikings split on "Senior Day"

On "Senior Day", Melissa Nelson collected four hits, scored two runs and had an RBI as Augustana split with North Park.

On “Senior Day”, the Augustana softball team received solid pitching performances from a trio of freshmen in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header split with North Park. The Vikings lost the first game 2-1 but bounced back to take the nightcap by a score of 6-0.

Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.) went six innings in the first game and struck out five while giving up six hits and two runs and was tagged with the defeat. In the second game Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) went 5 1/3 innings and struck out three while giving up five hits and getting the win. Courtney Ledezma (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) came on in relief in both games and did not allow a run while striking out three.

Augustana is now 17-15 overall and 5-5 in the CCIW while North Park is 14-12 and 1-7 in league play.

GAME 1 – NORTH PARK 2, AUGUSTANA 1

Augustana scored a run in the bottom of the first inning but that is all the scoring North Park starter Kate Seebacher would allow. She limited the Vikings to just five hits with two strikeouts as she picked up the complete game victory.

Junior Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) led off the Augustana first with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and came home on a ringing double to left field off the bat of Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.). That would be all the scoring for the Vikings in the game.

North Park struck for a pair of runs in the top of the fourth off Hintz and made them hold up for the victory.
Nelson had two hits in defeat.

GAME 2 – AUGUSTANA 6, NORTH PARK 0

Augustana clubbed 10 hits off three North Park pitchers in a 6-0 victory in the second game of the double header to collect a split. Yaros worked 5 1/3 innings and moved her record to 8-3 and Ledezma worked the final 1 2/3 innings and had two strikeouts and gave up just one hit.

In the top of the second inning Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) led off with a walk and Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) pinch ran for her. Staples went to second on a wild pitch and third on a ground out. She scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Lauren Schneiderbauer (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.).

The Vikings added tow in the third when Melissa Nelson doubled and scored on a single by Jenna Nelson. Jenna Nelson came home on a ground out by freshman catcher Randi Applehans (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.). In the top of the fifth a single by Kelsey Winter (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) drove in Melissa Nelson to make it 4-0.

The final two runs came in the sixth to make the final score 6-0. Winter, Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.), Melissa Nelson and Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) all had two hits to lead the offense.
