2011 Season - Vikings overcome miserable conditions

Sophomore Alex Rindone won both the 100 and the 200 at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, April 16 at Paul V. Olsen Track. Both of his winning times were under the NCAA Division III qualifying standard but were wind-aided and will not count as qualifying marks.

Senior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) were both double winners as Augustana ran away from a talented field to win the Meet of Champions on Saturday, April 16. The 10-team meet was held under miserable weather conditions at Paul V. Olsen Track/Ericson Field but that didn’t stop the Vikings from scoring 191.5 points. High winds, rain and even snow hindered times and distances but head coach Paul Olsen’s squad did manage to eclipse NCAA Division III qualifying in four events.

Augustana’s closest competitor in the team standings was Wisconsin-Whitewater with 124 points while Wisconsin-Stevens Point was third with 119.5 and Monmouth took fourth with 107. Wisconsin-Platteville (92), Carthage (66), Luther (63), St. Ambrose (39), Loras (25) and Dubuque (20) rounded out the field.

Zeunik won the long jump with a leap of 21’ 7 ½” and took the triple jump with a mark of 46’ 2 ½”. Rindone won the 100 in :10.64 and the 200 in :21.39. Both of those times were under the NCAA qualifying standards in each event but will not count because they were wind-aided.

Sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won the 400 in :50.12 and senior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) took the decathlon with 6,159 points and that was also better than the NCAA qualifying mark. The Vikings also got victories from the 400 relay (:42.42), 1600 relay (3:26.73) and the 3200 relay (8:25.33). In the 400 relay it was freshman Jay Graffanga (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.), sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Rindone.
