Augustana breaks ground on new lacrosse, soccer field
This week Augustana College started construction on a $1.3 million lacrosse, soccer field located in the southwest corner of campus (12th Avenue and 30th Street). The field will serve the intercollegiate sports of soccer and lacrosse for both men and women. The expected completion date is August 1.
"The addition of a sport-specific venue for our men's and women's lacrosse and soccer programs is a significant statement about the value Augustana places on its intercollegiate athletics program and certainly differentiates us from our competitors," said Mike Zapolski, athletics director. "Lacrosse is the fastest-growing sport in the country, and we are excited to be on the forefront of its continued development in the Midwest."
The new field will include synthetic turf, a lighting system, permanent seating for about 300 people, pressbox and scoreboard. Augustana chose the turf surface as a way to reduce maintenance costs on the field and allow for more usage during a variety of weather conditions.
"We are thrilled to be in a position to develop a high-quality athletic venue for four of our intercollegiate sport teams," said Paul Pearson, vice president of business and finance. "The tradition created by our men's and women's soccer programs over the years warrants continued and additional investment in these programs. The college is ready to embrace lacrosse [men's and women's] by providing a springboard venue to incubate success in the newest of our intercollegiate athletics program."
Planning for the new field started last summer after the Augustana Board of Trustees added men's lacrosse to the varsity sports roster. The field will provide a competition and practice venue for soccer and lacrosse teams, and club and intramural programs as well as community teams.
