Mazda Motorsports manager and alumnus puts 35th annual Business Day in motion

Augustana Business Day will help set students on the fast-track to a successful career with a full day of networking and job shadowing opportunities on Thursday, April 28. The one-of-a-kind event will begin in the Carver P.E. Center (3500 5th Ave.) with a keynote address by John Doonan '92, Mazda's manager of Motorsports Team Development.

Participating students and business leaders will begin their day with a complimentary hot breakfast and Doonan's keynote address. He will share insights from his journey from Augustana to Mazda Motorsports, where he oversees the company's domestic and international auto racing programs.

Business Day is an opportunity for students of all majors to connect their classroom studies with experiences in the real world. Participants choose a company or organization that matches their areas of interest to shadow for the day. Those connections may lead to a future internship or full-time employment.

This year more than 50 local businesses and organizations will participate, and Karen Petersen, Business Day coordinator and business administration instructor, estimates more than 130 students will attend.

In addition to helping students explore their career interests, Business Day is a valuable job-networking opportunity both for students and local business leaders.

"Companies are able to connect with today's generation of high-potential college students and communicate the strengths of their organizations," Petersen says. "It is also a great way for them to build brand awareness and give back to the community."

Business Day is free for participating students and business leaders. Every year, Augustana's business administration department selects one Business Day charity and invites participants to make freewill donations in support of this cause. This year's charity is place2b, a nonprofit organization in the Quad Cities designed as a safe haven for local youth. The initiative provides housing options, counseling services, academic support and social opportunities for youth without proper home support or other resources.
