2011 Season - Vikings drop slugfest at Elmhurst
|Jared McIntosh hit his second homer of the season, scored three runs and drove in three, but it wasn't enough to keep the Vikings from falling 16-15 to Elmhurst on the road Sunday.|
ELMHURST, Ill.-Augustana fell behind 9-2 Sunday and just couldn't quite come all the way back, falling 16-15 to Elmhurst at Butterfield Park. The 14th-ranked Vikings fall to 16-4 overall and 6-2 in the CCIW, while the Bluejays improve to 11-9 overall and 1-7 in the league.
The teams combined for 34 hits in the slugfest and scored in 12 of the 17 half innings played. The Vikings scored first, taking advantage of a pair of Elmhurst errors to put two runs on the board in the first. Pat Wilson (Stevenson HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) drove in one of the runs with a single to center. The Bluejays came right back however, getting three runs off Ben Heaton (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Heyworth, Ill.) in the bottom of the inning. Dave Wolak had a two-run single.
Elmhurst added six in the third, knocking out Heaton. The big hits were a two-run double by Wolak and Alex Molek's two-run triple.
The Viking refused to pack it in. After each team got a run in the fourth to make it 10-3 Elmhurst, Augustana got three in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Jacob VanDuyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) and a sacrifice fly by Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.). The other run scored when Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) came home on a balk. The lead was cut to 10-8 in the sixth as the Vikings got a pair of runs on a Bluejay error and T.J. O'Donnell's (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) sacrifice fly.
Tyler Wargo's two-run double keyed a four-run sixth for the Bluejays as they extended the lead back to 14-8. The teams continued to trade blows as Augustana pushed across an unearned run in the seventh and each team plated a pair in the eighth.
Trailing 16-11 heading into the final frame, Augustana got a leadoff double to right by freshman Zac Chuvala (Rocky Mountain HS, Fort Collins, Colo.). Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) followed with his fourth hit of the game, a double. Both came home one out later when O'Donnell reached on the sixth Bluejay error of the afternoon. With two outs, McIntosh launched his second homer of the season down the left field line to cut the margin to 16-15. However, Bluejay reliever Zach Hofer got VanDuyne to ground to short to end the game.
Juhl had four of the Vikings' 18 hits and scored twice. Serna went 3-for-4 with two driven in. McIntosh was 2-for-5 with three scored and three driven in. Hoffman, Wilson and VanDuyne each had a pair of hits as well. Heaton suffered his first loss of the year after three wins.
The Vikings visit Monmouth, Illinois on Monday, April 11, facing the Fighting Scots of Monmouth College in a non-conference contest scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
