2011 Season - Two shutouts key sweep over Wheaton

Junior Jillian Gibbs hit a grand slam in the fifth inning of the first game as Augustana swept Wheaton in CCIW action on Saturday, April 9.

A pair of shutouts by the freshman pitching duo of Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.) and Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) was the big news as Augustana swept a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header on Saturday, April 9. The Vikings beat Wheaton 10-0 in the first game with Hintz tossing a four hitter in the five inning game and then took a 1-0 decision in game two with Yaros allowing just two hits.

Junior Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning of game one that ended the contest due to the 10-run rule.

Augustana is now 14-12 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW and the Vikings have won four in a row heading into a non-conference double header on Sunday, April 10 at Wisconsin-Platteville.

GAME 1 – AUGUSTANA 10, WHEATON 0

The Vikings made short work of the Thunder in the first game of a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header, winning 10-0 in just five innings. Augustana was leading 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth before exploding for seven runs to end the game.

In the second inning freshman Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) doubled with one out and went to third on a single by senior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.). A suicide squeeze bunt by junior Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) successfully brought Watson home with the game’s first run.

Nelson lined a home run to right center field with pinch-runner Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) on board in the fourth to make it 3-0. Staples was running for Sarb, who led off the frame with a single.

In the bottom of the fifth Vikings put seven  runs up while collecting just three hits. The big blow in the inning was a grand slam home run off the bat of Gibbs that made the score 10-0 and ended the game.

Freshman Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.) worked five innings and allowed four hits and no walks while striking out three. She moved her individual record to 6-4 on the season.

Watson and Melissa Nelson had two hits each while Gibbs had five runs-batted-in during the game.

GAME 2 – AUGUSTANA 1, WHEATON 0

Freshman Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) spun a two hit complete game gem as Augustana defeated Wheaton 1-0 to complete a sweep in CCIW action. Yaros walked six batters and posted six strikeouts as she moved to 6-2 on the season.

The Vikings squeezed across the only run Yaros would need in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) walked to lead off the inning and then stole second. She went to third on a ground out off the bat of senior Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) and came home on a single by freshman Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.).

Wheaton pitcher Danielle Schmidt was just as impressive as Yaros as she allowed just two hits in the game as well.
