April 07, 2011
Rock Island, Ill. — Guinness World Records notified Augustana College today it now holds the record for the longest chain of people licking ice cream. The record of 2,694 people licking ice cream simultaneously was set on April 20, 2010, on campus at Ericson Field.

The college and the Quad-City community came together nearly a year ago to beat the record set in 2009 by 2,500 people in De Valladolid, Spain. Augustana chose to challenge the record with the new Whitey's ice cream flavor, "Augustana Viking Pride," which was created to honor the college's founding 150 years ago.
"Augustana is thrilled to learn we are now world record holders," said Kamy Beattie, director of public relations. "We are so appreciative of Whitey's and the many community members who came out to support us in our endeavor to break the record, and we look forward to celebrating."
Augustana Viking Pride, which can be found at any Whitey's location in the Quad-Cities, was created through a naming competition that drew more than 100 submissions from campus community and alumni. The names were narrowed down to 13 finalists, and then a group of seven tasters guided Whitey's owners and alumni Jon and Jeff Tunberg to Augustana Viking Pride. The flavor is peanut butter ice cream with fudge swirls and Oreo chunks.
