2011 Season - Sweep of Monmouth pushes Vikings to .500

Stephanie Sarb collected four hits and had five runs-batted-in as Augustana swept Monmouth to move to 12-12 on the year.

Solid pitching and timely hitting allowed Augustana to sweep a non-conference double header at Monmouth on Wednesday, April 6 at Bobby Wold Field. The Vikings defeated the Scots 5-2 in the first game and came back with a 6-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Three freshmen handled the pitching load for head coach Kris Kistler’s team on Wednesday afternoon as Augustana moved to the .500 (12-12) mark on the season. Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.) worked 6 1/3 innings in the first game and picked up the win to move to 5-4 this season. Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) went six innings in the second game and is now 5-2. Courtney Ledezma (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) came on in relief in both games and shut the door on Monmouth rallies.

The Vikings scored two runs in the top of the seventh to build a 5-1 cushion in the first game and then scored four runs in the top of the seventh in game two to break a 2-2 tie.

GAME 1 – AUGUSTANA 5, MONMOUTH 2

The Vikings scored early and late and got a good combination on the mound from the freshman duo of Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.) and Courtney Ledezma (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) to come away with a 5-2 victory in the first game against Monmouth.

In the top of the first inning Augustana wasted no time putting runs on the board. Senior Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) led off with a triple and came home on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.). Peterson was safe on the play and she went to second on a passed ball. Freshman Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) walked and senior Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) followed with a double that scored Peterson and Watson.

Hintz did her work on the mound, allowing one run in the bottom of the fourth and her team provided some insurance in the top of the seventh. Ahead 3-1, Trojanowski again provided the spark, this time reaching on an error and advancing to second on a sacrifice by Peterson. She went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by sophomore Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.). Junior Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) pinch ran for Nelson and promptly stole second. She came home on Watson’s double to make it 5-1.

In the seventh Hintz ran into trouble, allowing one run to make the score 5-2 but Ledezma came on and got the final two outs.

GAME 2 – AUGUSTANA 6, MONMOUTH 2

A four run seventh inning provided the difference as Augustana beat Monmouth 6-2 to complete a double header sweep. The Vikings picked up single runs in the first and the second to jump ahead 2-0 but the Scots scored a pair of runs off Augustana starter Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) in the bottom of the fifth to tie the contest at 2-2.

In the seventh freshman Kelsey Winter (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) opened with a single and junior Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) followed with a single to move Winter to second. A sacrifice by senior Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) moved Winter to third and Gibbs to second. Sophomore Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) singled home Winter and Gibbs to give the Vikings a 4-2 lead and Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) followed with a home run to bring home Nelson and make it 6-2.

Yaros gave way to Ledezma in the seventh and survived one walk to preserve the win. Yaros struck out four and walked just one while scattering eight hits to move to 5-2 on the season. Sarb, Winter and Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) each had two hits with Sarb collecting three runs-batted-in.
