2011 Season - Martin named CCIW "Pitcher of the Week"

Augustana junior Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.) has been selected as the “Pitcher of the Week” in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, it was announced today. Martin was outstanding in the Vikings’ three-game sweep of Wheaton on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2.
The 6’ 4”, 215 pound Martin was called on twice in relief and he responded with a pair of tremendous efforts.
He pitched 3 1/3 innings in the Vikings’ 15-5 victory over the Thunder on April 1 at Wheaton. He entered the game in the bottom of the sixth with Augustana leading 7-5 but Wheaton had two runners on and a run already in. Martin got out of the inning with a strikeout and then worked three more scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one more batter to give him two or the game. Eventually Augustana won 15-5 and he was given credit for a save.
The next day, Saturday, April 2, he was called upon with the bases loaded and just one out in a tie game (5-5) in the top of the 10th. He induced an inning-ending one-two-three double play and then worked scoreless frames in the 11th and the 12th. The Vikings won 6-5 with a run in the bottom of the 12th and he was given credit for the win.
Martin worked six innings I his two appearances and allowed no runs, two hits and one hit-batter while posting two strikeouts. He picked up a save and a win.
So far this year Martin has seen action in eight games and has worked 16 2/3 innings with a 0.54 earned run average. He is 2-0 with one save and has 12 strikeouts and just two walks. Opponents are hitting just .155 against him with nine hits in 58 at-bats.
The son of Russell and Kathy Martin of Canton, Illinois, he is a math and education major.
