2011 Season - Vikings drop pair at Millikin

Sophomore Jenna Nelson hit a home run in the second game of Augustana's 5-2 loss at Millikin on Sunday, April 3 in Decatur, Illinois. She also had a double in the first game, a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Big Blue.

A pair of three-run innings proved to be too much to overcome as Augustana dropped a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header at Millikin on Sunday, April 3. The Vikings fell 5-3 in the first game and 5-2 in the second game to the Big Blue in the twin-bill, which was played at Borg Warner Field in Decatur, Illinois.

Augustana led 3-2 heading into the seventh inning of the first game when Millikin came up with a three run home run to win the game 5-3. In the second game the Big Blue put three runs up in the top of the first and went on to win 5-2.
The Vikings fell to 10-12 overall and 1-3 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

GAME 1 – Millikin 5, Augustana 3

Millikin’s Whitney Schafman hit a three run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Millikin to a 5-3 in the opener of a CCIW double header. Augustana took a 3-2 lead into the last inning with freshman Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.) on the mound.  A single, a fly ball out and a walk set the stage for Schafman’s heroics.

Augustana scored first with a single run in the top of the second inning. Freshman Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) led off with a walk and then came home on an RBI double off the bat of senior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.).

In the top of the fourth inning sophomore Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) led off with a double and then gave way to pinch runner Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.). Staples stole third and Nelson came up with her second double of the game to drive in Staples. A single off the bat of senior Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) brought home Nelson.

Millikin scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap to 3-2 and it stayed that way until the seventh when Schafman delivered her game winning homer.

Hintz pitched well in defeat, scattering nine hits and striking out three while walking two. She fell to 4-4 on the year. Melissa Nelson led Augustana offensively with two hits, two RBI and a run scored.

GAME 2 – Millikin 5, Augustana 2

Once again the Big Blue used a single, three-run inning to pave the way to victory. Millikin scored three runs in the top of the first off Augustana starter Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) and used that advantage in a 5-2 victory.

The Vikings were trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth when Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) homered to lead things off. In the bottom o the fifth the Vikings scratched out another run when freshman Lauren Schneiderbauer (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) single home junior Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.).

Freshman catcher Randi Applehans (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and sophomore second baseman Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) each had two hits for Augustana in defeat.

Yaros worked 6 2/3 innings and gave up six hits while striking out five. She took the loss and is now 4-2 on the year.
