2011 Season - Vikings earn split in CCIW softball opener

Freshman Ashley Yaros worked the final four innings of Augustana's 2-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan in the second game of the CCIW opening double header. She allowed just two hits and had two strikeouts.

Augustana bounced back from a heart-breaking last inning loss to Illinois Wesleyan in the first game to earn a split in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action on Saturday, April 2 in Bloomington, Illinois. The Vikings dropped a 6-4 decision in game one to the Titans but came back and picked up a 2-0 win in the nightcap.

It was the CCIW opener for both teams and left Augustana at 10-10 overall and 1-1 in the CCIW while Illinois Wesleyan is now 10-4 and 1-1.

GAME 1 (Illinois Wesleyan 6, Augustana 4)

The Titans scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning after Augustana had taken a 4-1 lead into the final frame. Freshman pitcher Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.) had limited Illinois Wesleyan to just one run through the first six innings. 

She got the first out in the bottom o the seventh before allowing a single, an error and a double that closed the gap to 4-2. Hintz gave way to freshman Courtney Ledezma (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.). The Titans picked up a walk and a sacrifice fly before Allie Riordan uncorked a three run homer to end the game.

Augustana put up single runs in each of the first three innings. The Vikings scored in the top of the first when senior Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) led off by reaching on an error. She eventually scored the game’s first run on a single by senior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.). In the second Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) led off with a single and scored on Trojanowski’s two out single.

The Titans scored one run in the bottom of the second but Augustana answered in the top of the third when sophomore Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) homered to lead off. The lead went to 4-1 in the fifth when freshman Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) homered to lead things off.

Hintz deserved a better fate as she worked 6 1/3 innings and gave up four runs, two of them earned, with two strikeouts.

Trojanowski and Watson each had two hits.

GAME 2 (Augustana 2, Illinois Wesleyan 0)

Senior Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) and freshman Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) combined to toss a three hit shutout as Augustana beat Illinois Wesleyan 2-0 to salvage a split in the second game of the CCIW opening double header.

Ritzheimer went the first three innings and gave up just one hit with three strikeouts. She did walk five batters before giving way to Yaros. Yaros went the final four innings to pick up the victory, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.
Like the first game, Augustana scored in the first, this time it was the bottom of the frame. With one out sophomore Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) singled. She stole second and came home when Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) singled to center.

The second run for the Vikings came in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Lauren Schneiderbauer (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) singled with one out and then stole second base. She went to third on a ground out and came home on an error.
