2010-11 Season - Voiles named MVP for Vikings

Junior Bryant Voiles named "Most Valuable Player" for the Augustana men's basketball team following the 2010-11 season. The Vikings finished the year 27-4 and won the College Coneference of Illinois & Wisconsin regular season and tournament titles. They also advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III national tournament.

Following up on a record-setting 27-4 season in 2010-11, the Augustana men’s basketball program has announced this year’s team award winners. Junior Bryant Voiles (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) was voted the Vikings’ Most Outstanding Player, while senior Kyle Nelson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) won the Leading Rebounder Award and junior Troy Rorer (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) was named Best Defensive Player.

Voiles and Rorer, along with junior point guard Brian DeSimone (Buffalo Grove HS, Wheeling, Ill.), were named captains-elect for the 2011-12 season and the awards were rounded out with the naming of Kevin Schlitter (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) as the team’s Junior Varsity MVP.

Voiles was a second team All-CCIW selection this season. He finished second on the team in scoring (12.4 ppg) and rebounding (5.8) and was the team’s top three-point threat, hitting 58 of 140 attempts (.414). The versatile 6’ 9” forward also led the Vikings in blocked shots with 24 and was third in assists with 71. He was named MVP of St. Norbert’s Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament after helping Augustana claim the tournament championship.

Nelson, a 6’ 9” senior center, led the squad in rebounding (6.6 rpg) and scoring (13.7 ppg) for the second year in a row, earning first team All-CCIW honors for the second straight season as well. He also garnered first team All-Midwest Region recognition from both D3Hoops.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches this year and was one of just 10 finalists nationally for the prestigious Jostens Trophy, honoring the most outstanding Division III basketball player of the year.

Rorer, a 6’ 2” junior, averaged 25.1 minutes a game this year despite starting just six of 31 contests. He was regularly assigned to the opponents’ best perimeter scorer and was the top defender on a Viking team that was among the nation’s leaders in scoring (60.1 ppg) and field goal percentage (.408) defense. He finished second on the team with 34 steals and 73 assists, averaged 6.2 points and 3.9 rebounds a game and was a .347 shooter from three-point range.

Schlitter, a 6’ 8” freshman center, averaged 15.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per game to earn Most Valuable Player honors at the junior varsity level.
