2011 Season - Vikings romp to easy victory in own meet

Nine event winners, including four relay victories, pushed Augustana to an easy victory at the 70th annual Viking Olympics on Saturday, March 26 at Paul Olsen Track. Augustana scored 365.75 points to easily trump the second place total of 187.75 put up by Central of Iowa.
The Vikings won four relays, four running events and one field event as they ran away from the nine team field on a cold and windy day in Rock Island, Illinois. Following Central’s runner-up score of 187.75, St. Ambrose was third with 148 while Ashford was fourth with 110. Dupage (72.75), Culver-Stockton (44), Clarke (24), Dubuque (17.75) and Rockford (5) rounded out the field.
One of the biggest headliners for Augustana over the two day meet was junior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) and he was not one of the winning Vikings. Christensen, a two time NCAA Division III All-American, placed second in the discus but his toss of 161’ 3” qualified him for the national outdoor meet this spring.
The shuttle hurdle relay of Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.), Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) and Don Anciaux (Iowa City HS, Iowa City, Iowa) won in 1:07.22. The 800 relay of Jay Graffanga (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.), Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) sped to a win in 1:32.93. The 3200 relay unit of Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.), Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), Greg Weigand (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) won in 8:02.21. The 1600 relay of Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), Davis, Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Wood closed out the meet with a victory in a time of 3:24.03.
On the track, Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) won the 3000 steeplechase in 9:36.20. Rindone took the 100 in :10.86 and Davis won the 400 intermediates in :55.94. Ryan Brummet (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.) grabbed first in the 400 with a time of :52.10.
The lone victory in the field events came in the hammer where Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) uncorked a toss of 169’ 0”.
Christensen was second in the hammer (162’ 9”) and Stake took second in the pole vault with a clearance of 14’ 11”. Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) was second in the high jump with a leap of 6’ 6”. Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) placed second in the shot (46’ 10”) and third in the hammer (161’ 10”). Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) ran 4:06.57 to take second in the 1500 and Matt Dickey (Benet Academy, Downers Grove, Ill.) was second in the 400 with a time of :52.51.
The only Augustana relay team to not win was the 400 unit and the quartet of Jacob O’Rourke (Davenport Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), Patton, Wood and Rindone took second with a time of :42.46.
Pollastrini was third (4:08.13) and Tisza fourth (4:11.35) in the 1500. In the 800, Langslet grabbed third (1:59.01), Madison was fourth (2:00.09) and Joe Zahn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was fifth (2:00.10). Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) finished third in the 400 intermediate hurdles (:59.83) and fifth in the 110 high hurdles (:16.26).
Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) was third in the 400 in :52.55. The 5000 saw Ryan Miller (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) finish third (5:48.67), Brandon Gittelman (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) take fourth (15:51.63) and Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) grab fifth (15:55.65). In the 3000 steeplechase Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) was third (9:45.79), Tim Faith-Rosley (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) was fourth (10:15.76) and Isaac Trostle (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, Ill.) finished fifth (10:16.34).
Patrick Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) took third in the discus with a toss of 155’ 11”. Alex Mikos (Fenton HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) tossed the javelin 160’ 2” and finished third. Scott Pospisil (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 40’ 5 ½”. Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) placed fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 14’ 5 ¼” and Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) was fifth after going over 13’ 11 ¼”.
