2011 Season - 2011 MEN'S TRACK & FIELD INDOOR REVIEW

Phil Christensen set a new school record in the 35 pound weight throw and met the NCAA qualifying standard in both the weight throw and the shot put during the recent indoor season.

Led by senior All-American Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) the Augustana men’s track & field team once again enjoyed a successful indoor season. The 2011 campaign featured school records, conference champions, a top-five national ranking and a near-national championship performance from Zeunik.

Zeunik broke his own school record in the triple jump when he finished second in the NCAA Division III national meet on Saturday, March 12 in Columbus, Ohio. He went 49’ 5”, just 3 ½” shy of the winning leap put up by Chrys Jones of Centre College. Zeunik, who owns both the outdoor and indoor school records in the triple jump, earned All-American honors for the third time in his career. He was an All-American in both indoor and outdoor track & field as a junior when he placed seventh in the triple jump in both meets.

Augustana, under the direction of veteran head coach Paul Olsen, finished the 2011 season ranked fifth in the final NCAA Division III Indoor Dual Meet Power Rankings by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTCCCA). The Vikings totaled 158.27 points in the final poll while Wisconsin-LaCrosse was the national leader with 166.83. A year ago Augustana was sixth in the final indoor poll.

Senior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) turned in a tremendous outing at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin meet in Bloomington, Illinois on February 25-26. He won the pentathlon with 3,382 points, finished fourth in the long jump (21’ 8 ¾”) and the high jump (6’ 4 ¼”). After the meet was over, Stake was named the “Field Athlete of the Meet”.

Besides Stake in the pentathlon, Augustana got championship performances from sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) in the 55, junior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) in the 55 high hurdles, Zeunik in the triple jump and the 1600 relay. Rindone won the 55 in a time of :06.59 and Davis took the 55 hurdles in :07.75. Zeunik took the triple jump with a leap of 48’ 1 ¾”. The 1600 relay team of Rindone, senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Davis and sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won with a time of 3:19.78.

During the season, four school records fell. Rindone accounted for two of those. He set a new mark in the 200 with a time of :22.19 at the CCIW meet, breaking his own record of :22.22 from 2010. He also eclipsed the record in the 300 with a clocking of :35.74 at the Midwest Championships in Monmouth, Illinois on January 22. When Zeunik placed second at the NCAA meet with his leap of 49’ 5”, he broke his own school record of 49’ 4 ½” set at the Warhawk Invitational on February 4. The other school record came in the 35 pound weight throw when Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) recorded a toss of 60’ 2 ½” at the CCIW meet on February 25 in Bloomington.

As a team, the Vikings were second in the CCIW with 155 points as eventual national champion North Central won the meet with 245.5 points. Augustana also won the Lutheran Quadrangular at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa on January 29 and placed fifth at the Warhawk Classic in Whitewater, Wisconsin on February 4. All other meets throughout the season were open meets and no team scores were kept.

Rindone was clearly the top sprinter on the team with season’s best times in the 55 (:06.59), 200 (:22.19), 300 (:35.74) and 400 (:49.78). In the mid-distance and distance events, six different athletes had best times in events from the 600 up to the 5000. Christensen had the top throw in the shot (51’ 1”) and 35 pound weight (60’ 2 ½”). Zeunik was tops in both the long (22’ 9”) and triple jumps (49’ 4 ½”).

Zeunik was joined at the NCAA meet by freshman Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) in the high jump. The Vikings had a total of eight NCAA qualifying marks in the season. Rindone qualified in the 400 (:49.78), Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) in the weight throw (58’ 4”), Christensen in the weight throw (60’ 2 ½”) and shot put (51’ 1”), Stake in the pentathlon (3,382 points) and the 1600 meter relay team of Rindone, Wood, Davis and Patton (3:19.78).
