2011 Season - Outdoor season opens with win over SAU

Junior Amber Gruber won the hammer (128' 3") and placed third in both the disc (107' 1") and shot (32' 7") to help Augustana to a 127-77 win over St. Ambrose to open the 2011 outdoor track & field season.

Victories in 11 events and superior depth proved to be the keys as Augustana scored a 127-77 dual meet victory over St. Ambrose in the Early Spring Opener on Saturday, March 19. The opening meet of the 2011 women’s track & field season was held at Paul V. Olsen Track under relatively pleasant weather conditions.

The Vikings of veteran head coach Fred Whiteside won three relays, four track events and four field events as they showed nice balance.

The relay wins came in the 400 (:51.47), 1600 (4:11.48) and 3200 (10:14.36).

Senior Meaghan Reaney (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) took first in the 400 with a time of 1:02.93. Sophomore Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) won the 800 in 2:25.26. Senior Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) grabbed the 3000 in 10:56.38 and senior Amy Walsh (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) won the 400 hurdles (1:06.59).

Junior Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.) captured the javelin with a toss of 103’ 1”. Junior Amber Gruber (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) won the hammer with a mark of 128’ 3”. Senior Ella Mathieson (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) was first in the long jump with a leap of 17’ 0 ¾” and freshman Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) cleared 10’ 4” to win the pole vault.

In addition to winning 11 events, Augustana athletes grabbed 11 second place finishes. Sophomore Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) was second in the 2000 steeplechase (7:30.71) and sophomore Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) took second in the 1500 (5:04.15) and 3000 (11:01.81). Sophomore Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) was second in the 800 in 2:326.31. Freshman Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) was second in the 100 hurdles (:16.00) and third in the 400 hurdles (1:09.17). Sophomore Valerie Bach (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) was second in the 100 (:13.62) and third in the 200 (:28.23).

Junior Melanie Battistoni (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) finished second in the discus with a mark of 109’1” and fourth in the hammer (102’ 9”) and freshman Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Genoa, Ill.) was second in the shot with a toss of 34’ 5 ½”. Sophomore Taylor Tjardes (Gibson City/Melvin/Sibley HS, Gibson City, Ill.) cleared 8’ 4 ¼” to take second in the pole vault and was third in the javelin (82’ 3”). Senior Megan Lecander (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) was second in the high jump (4’ 6”) and third in the pole vault (8’ 4 ¼”). Sophomore Devon White (Indian Creek HS, DeKalb, Ill.) was the runner-up in the javelin with a toss of 88’ 3”.

Senior Brittany Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) placed third in the 2000 steeplechase (7:50.81) and junior Angela Pisani (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was third in the 1500 (5:07.72). Walsh took third in the 100 hurdles in :16.26 and sophomore Kirstillyn Pohlman (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) was third in the 400 in 1:03.17.

Gruber was third in the shot (32’ 7”) and the disc (107’ 1”) and sophomore Bethany Siwek (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) placed third in the hammer at 116’ 0” and fourth in the shot (32’ 4 ¼”). Freshman Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) recorded a mark of 14’ 10 ¾” to take third in the long jump and she was fourth in the 100 hurdles (:17.13). Senior Megan Garvey (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) was third in the high jump with a clearance of 4’ 6”.

Senior Sarah Johnson (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) took third in the 2000 steeplechase in 8:04.02. Junior Morgan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) was fourth in the 100 in :13.70 and fourth in the pole vault at 7’ 10 ½”. Senior Brittney Bennett (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) finished fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:10.39 and junior Melissa Lehpamer (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) was fourth in the 800 in 2:39.83. Sophomore Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) placed fourth in the 3000 in 11:35.62.
