2011 Season - Augustana drops two in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo.-It was a tough day for the Augustana softball team Saturday as the Vikings dropped a pair of contests at the Washington University Tournament in St. Louis. Augustana fell to Fontbonne 6-2 in the opener and 8-2 to Coe in its second game of the day. The Vikings are now 6-6 on the year.
Game One: Fontbonne 6, Augustana 2
Fontbonne broke open what had been a pitchers' duel with five runs in the last two innings to get the 6-2 victory in a 9:30 a.m. game. The Griffins got to Viking starter Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) for a run in the top of the first, but Ritzheimer got out of a jam, leaving the bases loaded to avoid further damage.
The Vikings evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) scored the tying run on a single to left by Christina Trojanowksi (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.).
The Griffins came right back in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs without the benefit of a hit. Ritzheimer issued a pair of base-on-balls before giving way to freshman Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.). Yaros loaded the bases with another walk and Fontbonne scored the go-ahead run on a Viking error. Another walk forced in the second run of the inning to make it 3-1 before Yaros induced a 5-2-3 double play grounder to end the frame.
Fontbonne scored three in the seventh to put the game away. Amy Simon had a two-run homer to center and Amanda Beaver a solo shot to left. Trojanowski drove in Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-2 and the Vikings got the tying run to the plate, but left the bases loaded.
Trojanowski had three hits and two RBI in the contest. Gibbs and Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) added two hits each. Ritzheimer took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the year.
Game Two: Coe 8, Augustana 2
Each starting pitcher was perfect through two innings before Coe exploded for five runs in the top of the third off Viking freshman Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.). The Kohawks loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of singles and an Augustana error. It looked like Hintz, who entered the game with an ERA of just more than a run, might get out of the inning when she coaxed an infield pop out and the Vikings cut down a runner at the plate, but Callie Morningstar delivered a two-run single to left to make it 2-0. Coe added two more runs on another Viking error and Brandi Haight made it 5-0 with an RBI single to center.
Jenna Nelson led off the Augustana fifth with a double and Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) got the Vikings on the board, scoring pinch runner Abbi Staples with a single to left. Gibbs singled to center to score Nelson and make it 5-2.
A walk, a Haight double and a three-run homer by C.C. Williams pushed the Kohawk lead to 8-2 in the top of the seventh.
Coe starter Ashlee Simon retired the Vikings in the final two innings to finish the complete game and get the win. Hintz suffered her second loss of the season to even her record. Melissa Nelson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Augustana continues play in the Washington tournament on Sunday, March 20, facing Webster at 9:00 a.m. and the host school at 11:00 a.m.
