BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Senior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) was named the “Field Athlete of the Meet” at the 2011 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Indoor Track & Field Championship. The meet was held on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26 at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Illinois.
Stake won the pentathlon with a score of 3,382 points, which is an NCAA Division III national qualifying mark, and placed fourth in the long jump (21’ 8 ¾”) and fifth in the high jump (6’ 4 ¼”). He was tremendous in the pentathlon on Friday, starting out with a time of :08.35 in the 55 hurdles and coming back with a 21’ 5 ½” mark in the long jump. That was followed by a 38’ 1 ¼” heave in the shot put and a 6’ 3 ½” clearance in the high jump. He finished with a 3:05.30 time in the 3000.
He was one of five champions crowned by the Vikings in the meet as they placed second in the team standings with 155 points. North Central won with 245.5 points. Carthage was a distant third with 95.5 points. Illinois Wesleyan (85), Elmhurst (32), Millikin (26) and North Park (17) rounded out the field.
Besides Stake, Augustana got championship performances from sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) in the 55, junior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) in the 55 hurdles, senior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) in the triple jump and the 1600 relay.
Rindone won the 55 meter dash in a time of :06.59 and placed second in the 200 with a new school record clocking of :22.19. He broke his own record of :22.22 set a year ago. Last year he won the 200 so the triumph in the 55 is his second indoor CCIW title and he won both the 100 and 200 in the outdoor championships as a freshman.
Davis won the 55 hurdles with an NCAA Division III qualifying time of :07.75. He was a double winner in the 110 high hurdles and 400 intermediate hurdles last year in the outdoor meet.
Zeunik won the triple jump with an NCAA qualifying leap of 48’ 1 ¾” and he placed third in the long jump with a mark of 21 8 ¾”. This was his third straight CCIW indoor title in the triple jump.
The 1600 relay team of Rindone, senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Davis and sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won with a time of 3:19.78, which is also an NCAA qualifying mark.
Junior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 60’ 2 ½”, which is a new school record. He broke the old mark of 58’ 4” set earlier this year by junior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.). Benning’s mark was set on February 12 at the Augustana Open. Benning placed fifth behind Christensen with a toss of 57’ 8 ¼” and both eclipsed the NCAA qualifying standard. Christensen also took fifth in the shot (50’ 8 ¾”) and Benning was sixth (49’ 2 ¼”).
Freshman Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) placed second in the high jump with a clearance of 6’ 8” and that is also NCAA qualifying. In all, the Vikings of veteran head coach Paul Olsen had six NCAA qualifying marks in the meet to go along with the two school records and five champions.
