WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Augustana continues to show offensive firepower early in the 2011 baseball season. The Vikings clubbed 16 hits, including four triples, as they beat Rochester Institute of Technology 16-5 on Saturday, February 26 at Chain-of-Lakes diamond in Winter Haven, Florida.
Just one day earlier head coach Greg Wallace’s team knocked out 17 hits in a 9-2 win over Grove City. That’s 33 hits in two days as Augustana moved to 3-0 on the young season. Four triples is certainly an unusual occurrence in a game but Jared McIntosh (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) hit two, Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and Anthony Concialdi (Fremd HS, Barrington, Ill.) each had one.
In the top of the first inning the Vikings struck quickly with four runs. Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) led off with a single and Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) walked. With one out Serna and Schmidt worked a double steal and Serna eventually scored on the play for the game’s first run. Schmidt scored when a ball hit by Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo. – now resides in Marina del Rey, Calif.) was misplayed for an error. McIntosh walked and a single by Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) drove in Barker. McIntosh eventually scored the fourth run of the inning when T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) singled.
As if the four run first wasn’t enough, Augustana struck four five in the top of the fourth to build a 9-0 lead. Concialdi led off with a triple and Serna doubled him in. After Zac Chuvala (Rocky Mountain HS, Fort Collins, Colo.) walked, a balk advanced both Serna and Chuvala one base. Pat Wilson (Stevenson HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) singled to drive in both. McIntosh’s first triple of the game plated Wilson and a single by Juhl drove in McIntosh.
Sophomore Ben Heaton (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Heyworth, Ill.) was impressive in the early going during his first start of the season. He allowed just one hit through the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. He gave up four runs in the frame but none of them were earned as two errors in the field didn’t help. He struck out five as he notched his first victory of the year. Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.) came in and got out of the sixth and didn’t allow a hit in 1 1/3 innings of work. Vince Frede (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) worked the final inning and a third and struck out two.
Ahead 9-4, Augustana broke loose for seven runs in the top of the eighth as the game was eventually shortened because of the mercy rule. McIntosh had a three run triple that served as the big blow in the inning.
Juhl went five for five with a run scored and three RBI in his first start of the year. Serna, Wilson, McIntosh and O’Donnell all had two hits.
