2011 Season - Mathieson finshes second in two CCIW events
|Ella Mathieson placed second in both the long and triple jump events at the 2011 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26 in Bloomington, Illinois.|
Senior Ella Mathieson (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) came up with two runner-up places in her two specialties to lead Augustana’s effort at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor track & field championship. The meet was held at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois on February 25-26.
Augustana placed fourth in the team standings with 50 points. North Central won with 252 points while Illinois Wesleyan was a distant second with 135 and Carthage was third with 123. Augustana actually tied with Millikin for fourth place with 50 points each. Wheaton was sixth with 44 while Elmhurst (7) and North Park (1) rounded out the field.
Mathieson placed second in the long jump on Friday, February 25 with a leap of 17’ 9” and then came back on Saturday, February 26 and grabbed second in the triple jump with a mark of 36’ 0 ¼”. She was the highest individual place winner for head coach Fred Whiteside’s Vikings.
Freshman Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) took third in the pole vault with a clearance of 10’ 8”. Senior Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:16.06.
Freshman Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) took sixth in the pentathlon with 2,695 points. Sophomore Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) was sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:20.42. Sophomore Samantha Bazely (Rock Island Alleman HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 34’ 4”. Freshman Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) was eighth in the 55 hurdles in :09.36.
The 1600 relay team of senior Brittney Bennett (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.), senior Amy Walsh (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.), Jones and Hottle was fourth in 4:04.13. The distance medley unit of Hottle, Walsh, Jones and sophomore Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) took fifth in 13:01.64.
