2011 Season - 17 hits fuel 9-2 win over Grove City

Augustana battered three Grove City pitchers for 17 hits during a 9-2 victory on Friday, February 25 at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida. Senior Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) collected five hits with three runs-batted-in and two runs scored to lead the way.
The Vikings got on the board in the first inning with a single run when Hoffman singled in sophomore Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.), who reached on a single and stole second. In the third they got another run when Schmidt and Hoffman opened the frame with singles. Both advanced a base on a wild pitch and Schmidt scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Pat Wilson (Stevenson HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.).
Grove City tied the contest in the top of the third with a pair of runs off Augustana starter Jared McIntosh (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) but the Vikings responded immediately. Junior Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) doubled with one out. After the second out of the inning, Hoffman’s single plated Serna to make it 3-2. Hoffman advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on Wilson’s single to push the advantage to 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth Hoffman singled with one out and went to second on a single by Wilson. Mike Barker’s (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo. – Marina del Rey, Calif.) single brought home Hoffman and Cecchi’s sacrifice bunt drove in Wilson.
The Vikings cemented the game with three runs with bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter Jake VanDuyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) led off with a walk and after one out Serna single and moved VanDuyne to third with Serna scampering to second on the throw. Schmidt singled home VanDuyne with Serna going to third. Wilson’s ground out scored Schmidt.
McIntosh worked the first five innings and gave up two runs on just four hits with three strikeouts to pick up the win.
John Peters (Rock Island Alleman HS, Milan, Ill.) and Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) each worked two scoreless innings to help preserve the win.
Augustana is now 2-0 on the season.
