2010-11 Season - Vikings drop to sixth in men's basketball

After a tough loss at North Central, Augustana slipped three slots to sixth in the latest NCAA Division III national polls. Head coach Grey Giovanine's team lost at North Central on Saturday, February 19 by a score of 50-46. The Vikings then travelled to Illinois Wesleyan where they suffered another hard fought loss to the Titans 70-68.
Augustana was third a week ago with 560 points and the Vikings fell three spots to sixth with 490 points. Williams (24-1) took control of the top spot from Whitworth (24-1) who had the number one ranking for the previous two weeks. In the most recent poll, Williams racked up 617 points and 18 first place votes while Whitworth totaled 576 points and six first place votes.
Augustana (22-3 overall and 11-3 in the CCIW) clinched a share of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin title with their win over Millikin on February 12. Augustana has now won 13 CCIW titles in its history and five of those have come in the last eight seasons. However, the Vikings will not be hosting the CCIW tournament due to the tie-breaker rules. Instead, the Vikings will play Wheaton in the CCIW tournament semi-finals on Friday February 25 in Naperville, Illinois on the campus of North Central. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:00 p.m.
A fixture in the national polls since Giovanine became head coach prior to 1999-00, the Vikings have now been ranked in the top 25 of the D3hoops.com poll for 84 weeks (out of a possible 173) since the website began doing the ranking.
