2011 Season - Augustana baseball pegged for fifth in CCIW

Senior catcher T.J. O'Donnell will lend experience to the Vikings this season. Augustana was picked fifth in the CCIW pre-season coaches' poll Wednesday.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Coach Greg Wallace's Augustana baseball team, which returns eight starting position players as well as eight of its top 11 pitchers from a year ago, has been picked to finish fifth in the CCIW in 2011 according to a poll of the league's coaches. Illinois Wesleyan, who went 19-19 during last year's regular season but went on to win the CCIW tournament and claim the Division III national title, was chosen as the favorite this year. The Titans received 47 points and five of seven first-place votes. Carthage was second with 44 points and the other two first-place votes.

In a year when six CCIW teams received votes in the 2011 D3Baseball.com pre-season poll, defending regular season champ North Central (36 points) was third in the conference voting and Wheaton (27) fourth. Augustana, with 25 points, edged North Park by one for fifth place. Millikin (11) and Elmhurst (10) were seventh and eighth, respectively.

Augustana went 25-15 last season and finished sixth in the CCIW at 8-13. First team All-CCIW and all-region selection Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) leads this year's returnees along with shortstop Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.), who was a second team All-CCIW pick-the only freshman position player named all-conference. Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.), Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa), who also sees time in the outfield and Joe Ufheil (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.), who was tenth in the nation with seven saves last year, are the top returning pitchers.
