2011 Season - Benning earns CCIW honor in track & field
|Junior Brian Benning has been selected as the "Field Athlete of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for his performance at the Augustana Open on February 12.|
Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) has been selected as the “Field Athlete of the Week” in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, it was announced today. Benning set a new Augustana school record in winning the weight throw during the Augustana Open on Saturday, February 12.
He also qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet, which will be held on March 11-12 in Columbus, Ohio at Capital University. Benning recorded a throw of 58’ 4”, breaking the previous mark of 58’ 3” set by Darin Decker in 2010. Benning also placed third in the shot with a toss of 45’ 1 ½”.
Prior to last weekend, Benning had a best mark in the weight throw of 56’ 4 ½” from the Warhawk Invitational in Whitewater, Wisconsin on February 4. His best throw in the shot this year is 47’ 1 ¼” from the Sol Butler Invitational in Dubuque, Iowa on January 15.
Augustana is currently ranked second in the latest NCAA Division III national dual meet power ranking. The Vikings will compete in the Dubuque Open in Dubuque, Iowa on Saturday, February 19.
Benning, the son of Bruce and Joan Benning of Winnebago, Illinois, is a secondary education major.
