FAQ

When should I intern?

Students do internships both over the summer and during the academic year. It's never too early to start searching for internship opportunities. The Internships and Careers Office constantly receives new internship postings. Begin searching at least a trimester before you'd like to intern. Getting a head start will give you more options to choose from.

Where can I intern?

Many organizations offer internships in the Quad City Area, making internships possible while still taking classes. During the summer, students can intern anywhere: in their hometowns, in other states, and even abroad.

Will the Office of Internships place me in an internship?

No, the Internships and Careers Office can assist you in finding internship opportunities, but students must contact the employers, themselves. No employer is assigned an intern and no student is given an internship.

Are interns paid?

Internships can be paid or unpaid, depending on the employer. But regardless of payment, the experience you receive will be the most valuable profit from your internship.

Can internships be taken for credit?

Students may take an internship for credit or may complete a zero-credit internship. Each department sets policies regarding available types of internships and eligible credit hours. Visit our Credit Options page for more information.

How do I begin my internship search?

A great place to start is at the Office of Internships located on the first floor of Sorenson. Hundreds of internship opportunities are available to you through our centralized program, which means no matter what your area of study, the Internships and Careers Office can help you to find internship opportunities.

But, before you start your internship search, set some goals and evaluate what you want to get out of an internship experience. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What are my career interests? What kind of work do I want to do?
  • What skills would I like to learn or develop?
  • When can I fit an internship experience in to my schedule?
  • What are my income needs and transportation options?

Where else can I look for internships?

Augie Hub is a great place to start your internship search. Augie Hub helps you connect with jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities! This online portal brings you closer to hundreds of employers and organizations, both locally and nationwide. Each student has an account set up. Use your campus username and reset password to get started. You can search opportunties, upload multiple resumes, and apply for positions and on-campus interview opportunties.

Attend an Internship Fair. Augustana College hosts ProFair in the fall and co-sponsors CareerFest in the Chicago area each spring. Fairs provide an excellent opportunity for you to find out what types of internships are available and to begin networking. Networking is a great way to get your foot in the door with organizations. Make a list of all the people you know that are currently working in a field or organization of interest to you. Contact these people and let them know that you are seeking a specific internship experience. Most importantly, follow-up with your contacts and thank them for their assistance in your search.

Or if you are interested in an internship abroad, visit the Office of International Programs.
