What did you do before Augustana: I worked in Admissions at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, IL.
Which departments do you act as a liaison for? Art, Art History, Theatre, CSD (Communication Sciences and Disorders), Graphic Design
What do you most love to tell prospective students about Augustana? That Augustana asks you who you want to be, not just what you want to do. An education at Augustana will not only prepare you for a successful career but a happy and fulfilling life.
What is your favorite time/tradition of the Augustana school year? My favorite time of the year is autumn. The students are either arriving or returning to campus, as well as the faculty. The campus is buzzing with a new energy with the start of the academic year. It is a fantastic scene to witness.
What's great about the Quad Cities? The Quad Cities is unique in that you have access to two states and multiple cities making up a big metropolitan area of around 400,000. Whether you are looking for something fun to do on the weekend or you want to explore your options for employment or internships, the Quad Cities has so much to offer.
What do you like to do around the community? I am a self-professed theatre nerd and so I love the fact that beyond the very active theatre scene here at Augustana (main stage productions, black box space for more experimental works and student directed pieces, music hall operas, and our improv troupe Heywire)- our community boasts several theatre companies or venues. Everything from Comedy Sportz in Rock Island, IL- for some improv, to the Quad City Music Guild in Moline, IL- for your favorite musicals, to Harrison Hilltop Theatre Company in Davenport, IA- if more edgy classical theatre is your style, to Genesius Guild in Rock Island, IL- for some Shakespeare in the park. That, and I like to eat- so our variety of restaurants is a huge plus. I don't have the room to list all of my favorites...
Do you do volunteer service in the community? Where? I am a Mom to two amazing girls, an elderly pug and wife to one of my best friends who keep me very busy. My volunteer hours have been cut so that I can spend time with my family.
Why did you decide to work in this field and/or at Augustana? I have the great privilege of working with students from all over the world. While it was not a career that I had in my sights after graduation, I feel very honored to have been given the role at Augustana College. I had a life-changing experience in college and I want to make that same opportunity available to each student that I work with.
What advice do you have for students who are searching for the right college for them? Make a list of schools of interest. Divide it up by academic programs, student to faculty ratio, distance from home, financial aid, or whatever criteria you are using to make your final college choice and rate each school on a scale of 1-10. Once you have done all of this- throw it out. Take a handful of schools from your original list and schedule visits to the campus. Walk around campus, eat lunch there, ask as many questions as you can think of. If you can visualize yourself there in the fall- it just might be the place for you! It is not a very technical process but I believe that it is the most telling of what the best fit is for you!
