ITEMS OF SPECIAL NOTE

1. TLA Availability for Juniors: It is Augustana's goal to provide TLA beds for every third-year student. Some TLA beds will be more popular than others. While projections show that enough beds will be available by fall, not everyone will receive their first choice. Please come to the housing selection session prepared with several options, as the most flexible individuals will have the easiest time securing the best possible assignment. Waiting lists will be available.

2. Housing for Seniors Opting to Reside On Campus: Due to the anticipated large size of the 2008-2009 junior class, all TLA beds will initially be offered to third year students. If openings remain after all juniors have secured housing, beds will be offered to seniors first and then to sophomores. At housing selection, housing options for seniors will be limited to Andreen, Westerlin, and Erickson.

3. Healthy Option Housing: Special living accommodations will be available in Westerlin 2W (female) and 1W (male) as well as the Andreen Apartments for students who prefer no contact with substance-related behaviors. Residents formally agree by contract not to bring substance-related behaviors (smoking, illegal drug use, alcohol consumption) back to their living areas. In return, residents in these areas will not be held responsible for substance-related common damage fines. Violation of contract tenets will result in disciplinary action and possible relocation.

4. Other Housing Changes:

a. There will be three new TLA houses available at housing selection - Ansvar House, located at 3054 9th, and Sanning located at 3048 9th, will each house three female students in single rooms. Erfara, located at 3052 9th, will be offered to males in three single rooms.

b. Also added to our TLA offerings is The Local Culture House One (a.k.a. Green or Eco House) located at 1118 35th. Three predetermined juniors will reside in this new campus venture to promote 'green' living.

c. After several years of female occupancy, Ryden House will become home to 14 male residents next year. Each room in this house will be secured with an individual lottery number.

HOW HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS ARE MADE

All current residential students will receive a random computer-assigned number based on their "residential age" (years post high school). For instance, 2007 high school graduates would be classified as 08-09 2nd Residential Life.

Students receiving inaccurate lottery numbers should contact the Office of Residential Life immediately.

LOTTERY NUMBER DESIGNATIONS FOR 2008-2009

5th Year Students 0001-1000

4th Year Students 1001-2500

3rd Year Students 2501-4000

2nd Year Students 4001-5500

TRANSFER STUDENTS' LOTTERY NUMBERS

We attempt to adjust transfer students' lottery numbers to reflect the number of years that have transpired since high school graduation. However, because the lottery is computer-generated, inaccurate numbers are sometimes assigned. Therefore, it is essential that transfer students check their lottery numbers prior to housing selection. If your lottery number is listed in the wrong number range, you must draw a new number at the Office of Residential Life. Housing assignments will be cancelled upon discovery of an inaccurate lottery number, regardless of its prior publication.

HOUSING SELECTION SESSION DETAILS

Lottery numbers are announced from the smallest to the largest during each of the sessions listed on the first page. You should plan to arrive ten minutes prior to your scheduled session to avoid missing the call for your lottery number. Please wait in the Westerlin Center cafeteria. The foodservice area will be open for your convenience.

Students planning to live together or who are seeking singles may secure a room by using their lowest lottery number. In order to secure a room, all beds in the room must be occupied. Students without a roommate(s) should refer to the Roommates section on this page.

If neither roommate can attend, a proxy (friend) may be sent to secure the room. The proxy must bring a signed letter of permission from the absent student(s). The letter should include their lottery and ID numbers and housing preferences.

Students who do not select housing by the end of the school year and who do not possess off-campus release status will be placed in rooms at random during the summer.

MISREPRESENTATION OF INFORMATION

If it is discovered either through routine examination of records or by student complaint that a student(s) has deliberately misrepresented circumstances or information in order to secure a room, then the following actions will be taken:

1. The room assignment will be cancelled.

2. The student(s) will be referred to the college judiciary for disciplinary action.

Please refer to the Assignment Change Penalties section for additional information.

ROOMMATES

Anyone selecting a double, triple, quad, quint, or sextet must fill the room/house with the full complement of roommates or they will be denied the placement. Those experiencing difficulty finding a suitable roommate are encouraged to utilize the roommate matching assistance provided by the Office of Residential Life. Information regarding this service will be distributed via email on March 17th.

Students who are not enrolled currently but who will be enrolled and on campus next fall (i.e. First-Year students, transfers, and interns) may be selected as roommates. Please keep in mind that only third-year roommates can be chosen for TLA housing.

Fall term students participating in internships away from campus or in an international experience may not be selected as roommates unless these students are willing to be billed for the bed during their absence. These students must have a signed PERMISSION TO RESERVE HOUSING FOR FALL TERM FORM on file in the Office of Residential Life by Friday, April 11, 2008. The form requires a parent/guardian signature. While paying to reserve a bed is neither recommended nor required, it is offered as a means to guarantee a specific room assignment.

TLA areas with populations of six (6) or under will be assigned as a community to a group using one lottery number, unless it is an area where a Community Adviser (CA) resides. In areas where a CA resides, the remaining rooms in the suite will be assigned as single rooms on an individual basis. Areas with populations of six (6) or under include the Andeberg Apartments, Andreen Apartments, Anderson/Bartholomew suites, Ansvar, Arbaugh/Naeseth suites, Asgard, , Baldur, Bellman A/B, Bergman, Branting, Bremer A/B, Celsius, Delling, Erfara, Forseti, Freya, Gustav, Hedin, House on the Hill apartments, Idun, Karsten, Larsson, Levander, Lindgren A/B, LCH 1, Martinson A/B, Milles, Moberg, Nobel, Oden , Ostara, Parkander, Roslin A/B, Swanson quads/quints /sextets, Sanning, Swedenborg and Tyr.

Rooms in houses/suites where a CA resides and houses with seven (7) or more residents will be assigned individually. Please be aware that CA assignments are permanent, meaning that CAs cannot be reassigned, even in cases of roommate conflict. Specific CA placements will not be announced until after the housing selection process is completed. Areas where CAs reside and/or areas housing seven (7) or more include Andreen Apartment 500, Arbaugh 6B, Arbaugh 9A, Bartholomew-300, Bostad, Esbjorn, House on the Hill doubles, Naeseth 2A, Naeseth 5B, one quad in Parkander, Ryden, Swanson LL-28, Swanson 1-26, Swanson 2-26, and Swanson 3-26, Viking and Zander.

HOUSING FOR SENIORS OPTING TO RESIDE ON CAMPUS

Because the incoming junior class is estimated to occupy most if not all available TLA beds, we are unable to guarantee TLA houses for seniors. At housing selection, choices for seniors wishing to reside in the residential system will be limited to beds in traditional hall settings (Andreen, Westerlin, and Erickson). We will, however, have a wait list in case openings occur. Seniors who wish to reside in campus TLA areas are encouraged to contact the Office of Residential Life to add their name to the wait list.

EUROPEAN TERM AND FALL INTERNSHIP PARTICIPANTS

Since students absent during fall term will be requiredABSENCE FROM FALL TERM HOUSING REGISTRATIONStudents who choose not to fill out a form will be placed at random when they return. Those who wish to reserve a bed during their absence from campus should refer to the Roommates

OFF-CAMPUS RELEASE

Students classified as seniors and thus assigned a lottery number below 2500 will be granted off-campus release provided they attended the seminar regarding life off-campus offered by the Office of Student Activities. Further information regarding this seminar is forthcoming for students who were unable to attend the fall or winter sessions. Off-campus release is not available at this time for any other students. Any student who currently has or is eligible for off-campus release will automatically reject their release status if they select a room.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION SITUATIONS

Students requesting a special room or off-campus release consideration due to one of the needs listed below must complete the required form and return it to the Office of Residential Life prior to 4:30 PM on Friday, April 11, 2008. Forms are available on the website and at the Office of Residential Life.

AGE

Students who will be age 22 on or before September 1, 2008 will be released to reside off campus by completing and submitting a SPECIAL CONSIDERATION HOUSING REQUEST

COMMUTER STATUS

Students who are interested in commuting from their parent's or guardian's home will find more specific information on the APPLICATION FOR EXEMPTION FROM ON-CAMPUS HOUSING REQUIREMENT.  All requests must be processed before July 11th  Beware: Students who choose to commute under false pretenses will be liable for all room and board fees and may be subject to other disciplinary actions.

MEDICAL RELEASE

This application process involves direct communication between the college and your physician. You will be asked to sign a release form for this purpose as well as provide a letter of verification from your physician or health care professional. Off-campus release will be granted only if no on-campus housing is available to support your specific medical need. Students placed in special housing arrangements for medical reasons may not select a roommate. Roommate placement will be based upon similarity of medical need. Submit a SPECIAL CONSIDERATION HOUSING REQUEST  and MEDICAL RELEASE FORM to begin this petition process. If you were placed in housing that accommodates your medical condition this year, you must still submit both forms listed above. However, in some cases new medical documentation is not necessary, so please contact the Assistant Director of Residential Life for advisement. Note: Off-campus release will not be approved for pre-existing conditions after housing selection unless there has been a significant and documented deterioration of the cited condition since the time of housing selection.

FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES

The Student Policy Committee (SPC) in cooperation with the Director of Financial Aid will review these requests.  Only petitions showing extreme financial hardship will result in off-campus release. Complete and submit a SPECIAL CONSIDERATION HOUSING REQUEST.
