2008 MEN’S INDOOR TRACK REVIEW

Ted McMillan earns All-America status and claims two events at the CCIW Championships to help lead the Vikings to a 9th place ranking in the final national poll

Junior Ted McMillan (Erie HS, Cordova, Ill.) claimed fifth place in the high jump with a leap of 6’ 8 ¾” at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in Ada, Ohio to claim All-America honors for the third straight year. McMillan finished second at the national meet as a freshman and seventh as a sophomore. McMillan also won the high jump and 55-meter hurdles at the CCIW Championships to help propel coach Paul Olsen’s Vikings to a 9th place finish in the final United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association power rankings.

The Vikings opened the indoor season at the University of Chicago Invitational on January 19. They took second place behind the host school with 151 points and produced five individual winners. McMillan won the high jump (6’ 8 ¾”) and

the 55 hurdles (:08.09), Evan Holschbach (Princeton HS, Princeton, Ill.) won the 200 (:23.36), John Thompson (Hall Township HS, Ladd, Ill.) won the pole vault (14’ 11”) and Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) claimed the shot with a throw of 44’ 9 ½”.

Augustana followed that up a week later by winning the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois. Augustana finished with 158.5 points, 23.5 ahead of second-place Wartburg. McMillan went 6’ 7” to take the high jump and Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) ran a 15:37.92 to win the 5000. Holschbach took second in the 300 with a school record time of :36.03.

After a 103-72 dual meet win over Wartburg, the Vikings competed at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational in Bloomington, Illinois on February 9, and came away winners again with 142 points to second-place Monmouth’s 112.5. Augustana had three individual winners, with McMillan, not surprisingly, leading the way. He again claimed his two best events, going 6’ 4 ¾” in the high jump and running a :07.77 in the 55 hurdles. In addition, Dan Leonard (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) won the 3000 with a time of 8:48.39.

The Vikings finished fourth at the Warhawk Classic in Whitewater, Wisconsin on February 15. Although they had no individual winners, Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) took third in the 400 with a new school record of :49.91 and Thompson finished second in the pole vault, clearing a season best 16’ 0”.

On March 1, Augustana traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin for the CCIW Championship meet. The Vikings took one relay and two individual championships to finish a strong second behind North Central. McMillan not only won the high jump with a leap of 6’ 5” and the 55 hurdles with a time of :07.73, he also anchored the winning 4 x 400 relay team. That group, consisting of Holschbach, Ekberg, Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), and McMillan, ran a 3:21.86.

At the Stevens Point Open on March 8, McMillan again won the 55 hurdles with a season-best time of :07.70, just :00.01 off his own school record set last year.

McMillan, in the high jump, and Thompson, in the pole vault, were Augustana’s representatives at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in Ada, Ohio on March 14-15. McMillan cleared 6’ 8 ¾” to claim All-America honors for the third year in a row while Thompson failed to place. In addition, McMillan met the provisional qualifying time in the 55 hurdles, but didn’t make the field. Other provisional qualifiers for Augustana not selected to compete were Wes Jackson (Annawan HS, Mineral, Ill.) in the pole vault, Bailey in the 5000, as well as the 1600 relay team of Holschbach, Ekberg, Somers, and McMillan.
