2007 Men’s Indoor Track Review

Vikings finish season ranked 12th in nation; 1600 relay team sets school record; Ted McMillan earns All-America honor in high jump; Augustana takes second in CCIW and McMillan is named the Most Outstanding Performer; Paul Olsen and assistants named “Coaching Staff of the Year” in the CCIW

Ted McMillan (Erie HS, Erie, Ill.) made it back to the NCAA Division III national indoor track & field championship meet at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana as a sophomore after placing second in the high jump as a freshmen.  He competed in the high jump on Saturday, March 10 and jumped ¾” higher than last year and took seventh place at the meet, earning All-American honors for the second straight season with his leap of 6’ 8 ¾”.  McMillan also qualified in the 55 hurdles but scratched from the event due to a sore hamstring.  He also earned All-America honors during the 2006 outdoor season in the 400 hurdles and high jump.

The Vikings finished second at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin indoor track & field championships on February 24 in Bloomington, Illinois.  The team scored 187.66 points, falling to champion North Central by a narrow margin of 10.23 points.  The Cardinal finished with 197.83 points, just enough to hold off the Vikings for its sixth straight CCIW indoor crown.  Augustana distanced itself from Carthage (3rd place – 115 points) and Illinois Wesleyan (4th – 78 points).  Elmhurst was fifth with 49.50 points and Millikin (36 points) edged Wheaton (32 points) for the sixth spot.  Millikin completed the field in eighth place with five points.  The Vikings won six titles at the championship meet, with McMillan once again leading the way.  He took home the individual title in both the 55 meter hurdles (:07.69) and the high jump (6’ 4 ¼”).  McMillan also ran the second leg for the winning 1600 meter relay squad.  Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.), Eric Peekenschneider (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa), and Dillon Smith (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) all ran strong races as the foursome turned in a time of 3:22.09 for the victory.  Augustana continued to perform well in the relay events, with the distance medley relay team of Brad Holehan (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.), Jay Watson (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.), Rob Hanauer (East Peoria HS, Peoria, Ill.), and Kenny Slocum (Pleasant Valley HS, LeClaire, Iowa) winning the race with a clocking of 10:30.73.  Hanauer also won the 800 meter event, racing by the competition for a victory in 1:55.91.  Jeff Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) continued a great season for the distance runners with a top finish in the 5,000 meter run.  He completed the race with a time of 15:16.73.

The men’s track & field team opened its season with three straight team titles.  The Vikings won the University of Chicago Open on January 20, the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois on January 27, and the Augustana Invitational on February 2.  Augustana won four titles in Chicago.  McMillan picked up right where he left off in his sophomore season debut, earning wins in the high jump and 55 meter high hurdles.  He leaped 6’ 5” in the high jump and sprinted to the finish line in :07.92 in the hurdle event.  David Zeko (Somonauk HS, Sheridan, Ill.) began his collegiate career with a victory in the triple jump (42’ 4”).  The distance medley relay foursome of Hanauer, Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa), Zac Cupples (Marquette HS, Ottawa, Ill.), and Holehan claimed the fourth top finish for Augustana, racing to victory with a time of 10:34.61.

Augustana dominated the speed events en route to the team title a week later at the Midwest Invitational.  The Viking sprinters captured titles in the 200, 300, 400, and 600 meter dash events.  Evan Holschbach (Princeton HS, Princeton, Ill.) won the 200 race with a time of :23.07.  Daniel Slonina (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) crossed the finish line in the 300 meter race with a clocking of :38.18 for the win.  Dillon Smith (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) raced to a narrow victory in the 400 meter event, finishing in :50.77 and winning by :00.02 over the second place runner.  Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) completed the sweep of the four events with a first place finish in the 600 meter run.  He crossed the finish line with a time of 1:22.24 to grab the top spot.  The distance runners also competed well with Dan Leonard (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) winning the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:35.28.  The distance medley relay team of Bailey, Watson, Hanauer, and Tim Frey (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) won the title with a clocking of 10:40.24.  McMillan won the high jump title, leaping to victory with a jump of 6’ 8 ¾”.

A three week sweep of team invitational titles concluded with a top finish at the Augustana Invitational.  The Vikings grabbed seven titles at the meet, including two individual top finishes by Peekenschneider.  He took first place in the high jump with a leap of 6’ 0” and won the 400 meter dash with a clocking of :51.50.  Hanauer was also a double winner for Augustana.  He won the 800 meter race in 1:57.36 and anchored the 3200 meter relay squad of Matt Fulton (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.), Cupples, and Holehan to the title with a time of 8:08.08.  Josh Branch (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) also turned in a great night, setting a new venue record with a triple jump of 45’ 6 ½” to take the title.  Andy Kubiak (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) later took the title in the 3,000 meter event, winning with a time of 8:59.91.  Justin Kossak (Somonauk HS, Somonauk, Ill.) won the long jump by leaping 18’ 8 ¾”.
