2004 Men's Indoor Track Review
2004 MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Tom McIntire establishes new record in winning 35 pound weight throw at CCIW meet; Vikings win three invitationals and place second in conference
Sophomore Tom McIntire (Galva HS, Galva, IL) made a pretty good name for himself last spring when he met the NCAA Division III qualifying standard in the discus. This past fall he started picking up recognition as a tight end on the Vikings football team. It should come as no surprise, then, to learn that he had a tremendous indoor track & field season while tossing the 35 pound weight around. It was so good, in fact, that he knocked his coach from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin record books.
McIntire won the 35 pound weight class in the CCIW indoor championship, which was held at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday, February 28. He recorded a toss of 52’ 10 ¼” and in the process he wiped the old record of 52’ 3 ¾” off the books. That mark belonged to David Gonzalez from the 2002 season. Gonzalez spent the winter months coaching the throwers in the Augustana program.
Thanks in part to McIntire’s efforts, the Vikings finished second in the CCIW meet with 122 points, trailing only the 181 turned in by champion North Central. Augustana was seven points ahead of host Carthage in third. The 800 relay team of Dillon Smith (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, IL), Joe Mastrino (Immaculate Conception HS, Elmhurst, IL), Micah Kelsey (Belvidere HS, Belvidere, IL) and Jason Myers (Prairie Central HS, Fairbury, IL) won the conference title with a time of 1:31.72.
In addition to placing second in the CCIW meet, the Vikings of veteran head coach Paul Olsen won the Chicago Invitational, the Monmouth Invitational and the Leif Erickson Invitational and placed second in the Illinois Wesleyan Relays.
