VIKINGS QUALIFY FOR NCAA NATIONAL MEET IN SIX EVENTS; FINISH THIRD IN COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Augustana men’s track & field team finished the indoor season ranked 16th in final NCAA Division III power rankings. That high ranking along with six NCAA Division III National meet qualifiers and two CCIW conference champions highlight a successful indoor season for the men’s team.
Junior David Gonzalez (Maine West HS, Des Plains, IL) was the conference champion in the 35 pound weight throw with a provisional qualifying toss of 52’ 3-3/4”. The throw by Gonzalez shattered his own conference record of 45' 9 1/4" that was set just last year in Bloomington, Illinois. He also replaced himself in the school record books, breaking his old mark of 49' 7 3/4" that had been set only one week earlier in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Senior Rudy Kovachevich (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, IL) outpaced all five runners from traditional distance powerhouse North Central to take home the conference 5000 crown with a time of 15:08.28, breaking the old conference mark of 15:14.15 of Joe Pontrelli of Elmhurst from a year ago.
The Vikings provisionally qualified two individuals in the pole vault. Senior Tony Bonucci (Princeton HS, Princeton, IL) bettered the provisional mark of 15’ 1” in six of the Viking’s seven meets and finished the season with a best of 15’ 6-1/4” at the Iowa Invite on January 12. Junior Jeff Lindeman (Grayslake HS, Antioch, IL) also reached the qualifying mark with a vault of 15’ 1” at the Warhawk Classic on February 16.
Junior Brandon Vahl (Waukegan HS, Lindenhurst, IL) qualified for the national meet in the 800 with a time of 1:54.62 at the Warhawk Classic. At the Division III Championships in Ada, Ohio, Vahl ran 1:57.05 in his preliminary heat, which ranked him tenth, just two spots out of the finals.
The Vikings also had two relay teams achieve the provisional qualifying standard. The 1600 relay team of Joel Wietfeldt (Auburn HS, Auburn, IL), Tim Heisler (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, IL), Vahl and Mike Bartlett (Highlands Ranch HS, Littleton, CO) ran a season best time of 3:20.5 to qualify at the Truman State/Wartburg Triangular on February 1.
The distance medley team of Jason Williams (MacArthur HS, Decatur, IL), Brad Blake (Wethersfield HS, Kewanee, IL), Brad Cosentino (Lincoln Way HS, Frankfort, IL) and Kovachevich ran a time of 10:17.20 at the Warhawk Classic to better the national meet qualifying mark. That time also set a new indoor school record in the event, bettering the old mark of 10:18.13 set last year.
The sprint medley relay of Wietfeldt, Heisler, Vahl and Cosentino also set a new indoor school record with a time of 3:37.15 at the Midwest Pentagular on January 26. That time bettered the old mark of 3:41.46 set last season.
Augustana finished third at the CCIW Championships held at Carthage College on February 22. The Viking’s 110 points put them just behind runner-up Carthage (121 points) and champion North Central (197 points).
Augustana finished first at the Midwest Pentagular in Galesburg, IL on January 26 and at the Truman State/Wartburg Triangular here in Rock Island on February 1. The Vikings also took home fourth place at the Warhawk Classic on February 16 and fifth place at the Pepsi Challenge on February 9.
