2011 Season - Zeunik breaks triple jump record again

WHITEWATER, Wis. - Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) broke his own school record in the triple jump to lead the way for Augustana at the Whitewater Invitational on Friday, February 4 in Whitewater, Wisconsin. The Vikings, ranked second in the latest NCAA Division III poll, also got a victory from the distance medley relay team and wound up the night placing fifth in the team standings with 60.50 points.
Wisconsin-LaCrosse won the eight team event with 137 points while North Central, the number one ranked team in the nation, was second with 126. Wisconsin-Whitewater was third with 122 and Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the third ranked team in NCAA Division III, took fourth with 99.5. Augustana had 60.5 points in fifth, followed by Chicago (46), Loras (18) and St. Mary’s (10).
Zeunik exploded for a 49’ 4 ½” leap in the triple jump to capture the event. He broke his own record, set on January 15 in Dubuque, Iowa, of 48’ 9”. His leap was well beyond the NCAA Division III automatic qualifying time for the national meet. For good measure Zeunik added a second place performance in the long jump with a mark of 22’ 8 ½”.
The distance medley team of freshman Isaac Trostle (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, Ill.), sophomore Devon Pace (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.), sophomore Joe Zahn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and freshman Andrew Allabastro (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) won with a time of 10:43.01.
Although he didn’t place very high, junior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) did hit the NCAA Division III qualifying standard in the weight throw. He was seventh with a toss of 56’ 4 ¼”. He also placed eighth in the shot put with a mark of 13.88 meters.
Junior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) took second in the 55 hurdles in :07.86. The 800 meter relay team of freshman Jessee Alexander (Cedar Falls HS, Cedar Falls, Iowa), sophomore Patrick Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.), sophomore Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) and freshman Jay Graffanga (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.) finished fourth in 1:43.47. The 1600 meter relay unit of Davis, sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), senior Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) finished fifth in 3:23.80.
Patton took fifth in the 400 in :50.39. Sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) was sixth in the 200 in :22.85. Junior Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) ran 9:00.36, good for seventh place, in the 3000. Senior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 4.39 meters to finish seventh in the pole vault. Freshman Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) was eighth in the triple jump at 12.98 meters.
Augustana will host the Augustana Open in the PepsiCo Center at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 12.
