Safety Coordinator
Status: Exempt This is a part-time 12 month position – 50%
Reports To: Director of Safety and Security
Overview: Under the supervision of the Director of Safety & Security, coordinates, plans, organizes monitors and oversees all safety programs, services, and safety training at the College to ensure work performed at Augustana is done in a safe manner. Coordinates and oversees compliance with all applicable safety regulations.
Job Duties:
- Directs Augustana’s safety programs to protect employees against harm, and maintain safe working conditions. Areas of responsibility include:
a. Fire Safety and Hazardous Materials
b. First Responder Training (CPR, AED, and First Aid)
c. Occupational Health and Safety (Hearing, Respiratory, Falls, Ladders, Ergonomics)
d. Physical and Laboratory Sciences
e. Environmental Safety (Air and Water Quality) - Formulates and suggests work safety standards, and enforces procedures. Risk prevention areas include hazardous materials exposure, accidents, fires, or other unsafe conditions. Meets compliance and reporting requirements of federal and/or state regulations.
- Coordinates and directs activities of the safety committee and works with this group to promote campus wide awareness of safety concerns and proactive strategies to prevent hazards.
- Coordinates and/or provides safety training to a variety of campus groups.
- Performs or oversees regular physical inspections of buildings, grounds, equipment and operations to identify hazards and/or incidents of non-compliance with local, state, and federal safety rules and regulations. Recommends preventative measures and/or corrective actions.
- Works with the Facilities department to create, maintain and improve efforts regarding fleet safety.
- Prepares and submits required reports and documentation to outside regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders.
- Acts as the College’s technical expert on safety-related matters and advises the Director of Safety and Security on matters relating to campus safety.
- Coordinate and participate in workplace accident investigations.
- Other duties as assigned
Education:
B.A. in a related field and/or combination of relevant education and experience.
Skills & Experience:
- 3-5 years of demonstrated experience within the safety field. Generalist experience encompassing the areas above is preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills & the ability to relate to a diverse audience including students, faculty, and staff.
- Detail orientation and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Analytical and problem solving skills.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 25 pounds on a frequent basis. This position requires good physical condition with the ability to walk for long periods and climb stairs in an outdoor environment. Also required is the ability to listen, hear, speak, read, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods of time.
Special Requirements: This position requires a valid driver’s license. Successful candidates must pass a criminal history check.
