2010 Season - O'Malley wins MVP in men's soccer

Senior midfielder Sean O’Malley (Bloomington University, Bloomington, Ill.) was selected as the Most Valuable Player for the 2010 Augustana men’s soccer team, it was announced today. O’Malley, a three year letterwinner, finished the 2010 campaign with two goals and one assist for a total of five points. He had one game-winning goal this year against Millikin University and took a total of 29 shots with 13 on target.
Junior Cory DeGrave (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) was voted the team’s “Best Defensive Player” with two assists for a total of two points during his third year. The Vikings recorded five shutouts during the 2010 season.
Junior Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.) won the team’s “Best Offensive Player” with five goals and four assists for a team high total of 14 points. Fidlow led the team with 68 shots and 28 shots on goal. He also scored the game winning goal in a 1-0 win over Carthage. Fidlow also tallied the lone goal in a 1-1 tie against Fontbonne and scored in conference matches against Illinois Wesleyan and North Central. His hard work was recognized at the end of the season when he was named to the CCIW all-conference squad as a second team selection.
Freshman Matthew Shipon (South HS, Elgin, Ill.) was selected as the “Newcomer of the Year” after he played in 20 games and tallied three goals and three assists for a total of nine points. He attempted 20 shots with 11 of them on goal.
Augustana finished the year with an 8-11-1 overall record and placed fourth in the CCIW. The Vikings edged the opposition with a 31-30 goal advantage over the course of the season. Augustana held a 290-255 lead in shot attempts and also took 87 corner kicks to just 82 for its opponents.
The Augustana junior varsity team also named its award winners. Freshman Jordan Carey (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) was the Most Valuable Player. Freshman Steve Lauman (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) won the Best Defensive Player honor and freshman Adam Vales (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.) was tabbed as the Best Offensive Player. The winner of the junior varsity Viking Award was junior Dean Burrier (Western Reserve Academy, Stow, Ohio) .
