2005-06 WOMEN”S SWIMMING REVIEW

 

Ramsey Vens wins two individual titles in CCIW championship and finishes 21st in 100 backstroke at NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships; She also sets two school records in freshman campaign; Six other Vikings crack all-time top ten lists; Team finishes fourth at CCIW Championship meet for second consecutive season

 

Ramsey Vens (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) capped off a stellar freshman campaign under second year Augustana head coach Jake Anderson by finishing 21st in the 100 backstroke on Friday, March 10 at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Vens finished with a time of 0:59.80. 

 

Earlier in the season, she set a new school record in the event with a time of 0:59.34 at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship Meet on February 9-11 at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center on the campus of Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  This broke her previous mark of 1:00.26 that had been set at the Grinnell Invitational on January 13.

 

The Vikings finished fourth at the CCIW Championship meet for the second consecutive year, but increased their total points from 178 to 437.  Vens was a double winner on the day, swimming to titles in the 100 (0:59.34) and 200 backstroke (2:10.04).  Michele Chao (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) also had a strong day, finishing second in the 50 freestyle in 0:24.51.  She narrowly missed out on first place, falling to Carthage’s Sarah Reynertson by 0:00.09.  Vens and Chao played a big part in the success of Augustana’s relay teams as well.  The 200 freestyle relay of Kelly Dougherty (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.), Ashley Casper (Lake Park HS, Itasca, Ill.), Vens, and Chao raced to a second place finish in 1:38.50.  The foursome also swam to a third place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:52.80) and fourth place finishes in the 400 medley relay (4:13.64) and 400 freestyle relay (3:40.12). 

 

Augustana won the Eureka Invitational on January 28 and the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on November 19.  At Eureka, the Vikings crowned six individual championships and one relay en route to winning the six team meet.  Vens had another great day in the pool, bringing home wins in both the 100 backstroke (1:01.52) and the 500 freestyle (5:36.71).  Chao won the 50 freestyle (0:25.98) and Casper took home first in the 100 freestyle (0:57.13).  Other winners were Dougherty in the 200 backstroke (2:25.23), Stephanie Leafblad (Warren Township HS, Gurnee, Ill.) in the 200 individual medley (2:27.25) and Jackie Grendizinski (Thornton Fractional South HS, Lansing, Ill.).  The 400 freestyle relay team of Laura Hineman (Prospect HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.), Casper, Vens, and Chao won in 3:50.36.

 

At Bloomington, the Vikings outdistanced eight other squads to take home the title.  Vens led the way with wins in the 200 individual medley (2:21.32) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.69) and was named Most Outstanding Performer at the meet.  Casper won the 50 freestyle in 0:25.74 and both swimmers teamed with Dougherty and Chao on the meet clinching 200 freestyle relay, winning in 1:42.25.  The 200 medley team also placed first as Vens, Grendzinski, Dougherty, and Chao swam a 1:56.83.

 

The 2005-06 women’s team also put a huge dent in the top 10 lists as seven swimmers raced their way into this elite group in at least one race.  Vens not only holds the school record in the 100 (0:59.34) and 200 backstroke (2:09.71), but also had the third best time in both the 200 (2:15.03) and 400 individual medley races (4:59.59).  She also had the 10th best time in the 1000 freestyle (11:39.85).  Chao had the second best time in the 50 freestyle (0:24.51).  Dougherty swam to the fourth best time in the 100 backstroke (1:02.26) and the seventh best time in the 100 butterfly (1:03.02).  Casper raced to the fifth best time in the 100 freestyle (0:54.74). 

 

Hineman and Leafblad both found their way into the top ten in two different events as Hineman had the fourth best time in the 400 individual medley (5:00.46) and was 10th in the 500 freestyle (5:31.48) with Leafblad holding the ninth best time in both the 200 (2:21.41) and 400 individual medley (5:02.61).  Grendzinski also cracked the top ten with a 2:37.73 in the 200 breaststroke, fast enough for eighth best all time.

 

The Vikings were 3-3 on the season in dual meets.  Augustana had team wins over Knox (85-56), Monmouth (114.5-81.5), and Lincoln (112-79).  The team also finished second out of eight teams at the Augustana Invitational.  Anderson is now 5-7 in dual meets with two fourth place finishes at the CCIW championship meet in two seasons.
