VIKINGS WIN 34th CCIW CHAMPIONSHIP IN SCHOOL HI
Pat Marsh was a happy man on the 16th of February when his Augustana Vikings wrestling team defied the odds and won the College Conference of
With only two seniors on the squad and with freshman and sophomores peppered throughout the lineup, Marsh knew when the season started that this would be a learning experience for his entire team. When the points were totaled at the CCIW meet, the Vikings were on top with 77 points, 8.5 ahead of runner-up Millikin's 68.5.
Augustana has long dominated this sport in the CCIW and the 2002 title allowed the Vikings to pick up the 34th league title since winning for the first time in 1963. It was the fifth CCIW crown in a row and the 20th in the last 21 years for the Blue & Gold. Marsh was named co-Coach of the Year in the league, sharing the honor with Tim Gotto of
Athough they crowned just two individual champions - freshman Carlos Sanchez (
Sanchez bumped up to 157 pounds from his normal 149 and it didn't seem to slow him down as he defeated Rick Lamas of
Five Vikings finished second to help bolster the team score. Matt Kapraun (
Besides the five runner-up finishes, Chris Acree (
Augustana finished the season with a 10-6 dual meet record, quite impressive considering that the Vikings were 1-4 at one point during the early portion of the year. The final NCAA Division III team dual meet rankings had the Blue & Gold 27th in the nation.
The Vikings were third in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional in the week after the CCIW meet.
Kapraun led the team in victories with a 30-12 overall record and a total of six wrestlers finished with at least 22 wins. Acree was 27-8 and
