2004-05 WRESTLING REVIEW
THREE VIKINGS TOP THE CAREER 100 VICTORY MARK; BRIAN DALY IS NAMED MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLER IN THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN; DALY IS SELECTED TEAM’S MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLER WHILE RYAN MCMURRAY WINS MOST VALUABLE PERFORMER HONOR
A trio of juniors reached the 100 victory plateau for the Augustana Vikings during the 2004-05 season, a milestone that only 14 others had attained prior to this year. Brian Daly (DeLaSalle HS, Chicago, IL), Larry Amedio (DeLaSalle HS, Chicago, IL) and Dan Stanton (Lincoln Way HS, New Lenox, IL) all entered the exclusive 100 win club this past year. All three have been three year regulars for head coach Pat Marsh.
Daly, who competed at 165 pounds, finished the 2004-05 season with a 40-10 overall record and he is now 115-30 for his career with one more season of competition. He is currently in 13th place on the school’s all-time win list. He was named the “Most Outstanding Wrestler” in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin when he won the 165 pound weight class with a 9-4 victory over top seeded Tyler Ludwig of Elmhurst in the championship bout. It was the third consecutive individual title for Daly, who won at 157 pounds as a freshman in 2003 and 165 pounds as a sophomore in 2004. He finished third in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional and qualified for the NCAA Division III national tournament, which was held at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota on March 4-5. He also claimed tournament wins at the “Dick Walker” Invitational and the Cornell Invitational.
Amedio, a 141 pounder, was 30-19 this year and he is now 109-51 in his career, good for 14th place on the all-time list. He won the 141 pound weight class at the Cornell Invitational on January 8. Stanton competed at 133 pounds after spending his first two seasons at 125. He went 30-22 this past season and is now 100-43 during his career, 17th on the school’s all-time victory list.
Besides Daly, the Vikings had one other NCAA Division III national meet qualifier and it was sophomore Ryan McMurray (Lyons Township HS, Willow Springs, IL) at 149 pounds. McMurray went 34-19 this year and won the Great Lakes Regional with a 5-2 victory over Jared Evans of Augsburg in the championship match. In just two seasons he has put together a fine career record of 70-34. He also won the “Al Hanke Invitational” and was third in the CCIW.
Sophomore 157 pounder Mike Kerr (United Township HS, East Moline, IL) was the winner of the Hardest Worker award. Kerr was 26-23 this year and he placed third in the CCIW. He also had second place finishes in the “Al Hanke” Elmhurst Invitational and the “Pete Willson” Wheaton Invitational. In two years he has a record of 43-35.
Dan Krcmar (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, IL) was named Most Valuable Freshman after compiling a record of 10-26 at 184 pounds. Sophomore John Parkhurst (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, IL) won the Most Improved Wrestler award after going 5-24 at 285 pounds.
Captains for the 2005-06 season will be Daly, McMurray, Amedio and Stanton.
Augustana finished the 2004-05 season with an 8-10 dual meet record and a fourth place finish in the CCIW. Included in that dual meet schedule were meets against Big 10 members Northwestern and Illinois. The Vikings placed second in the “Dick Walker” Invitational on December 11, second in the Cornell Invitational on January 8, second in the “Al Hanke” Invitational on January 29 and seventh in the “Pete Willson” Invitational on February 5. They finished the season with a fifth place finish in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on February 19 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
