2010-11 Season - 17-0 Vikings jump to third in NCAA men's basketball

The Viking players make their way back to the lockerroom through a throng of students after beating North Central 66-50 on Saturday, January 22. Augustana is now ranked third in the latest NCAA Division III national men's basketball poll.

A 17-0 start that included a pair of home victories last week, has propelled Augustana all the way to third in the latest NCAA Division III national ranking. The D3hoops.com poll shows head coach Grey Giovanine’s Vikings with 553 points and one first place vote for the first time this season. Last week Augustana was in eighth with 463 points.

The Vikings handled Millikin 72-58 on Wednesday, January 19 and then took care of North Central 66-50 on Saturday, January 22. Augustana is currently 6-0 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and will host Illinois Wesleyan (13-4 overall, 4-2 in CCIW) on Wednesday, January 26 in the Carver Center. After facing the Titans, the Vikings will go on the road and play at Elmhurst on Saturday, January 29.

Augustana set a new school record for best start with the 17-0 record. The old mark was 16-0 by the 1935-36 team.

Defense continues to be the benchmark for success this season as the Vikings are allowing opponents to shoot just .407 (343-842) from the field and only .342 (100-292) from three point range. Augustana is giving up just 58.8 points per game and eight straight opponents have been held under 60 points.

A fixture in the national polls since Giovanine became head coach prior to 1999-00, the Vikings have now been ranked in the top 25 of the D3hoops.com poll for 80 weeks (out of a possible 169) since the website began doing the ranking.
