2005-06 MEN’S SWIMMING REVIEW

Dan Betz named “Most Outstanding Swimmer” at Eureka Invitational; Viking swimmers finish sixth at College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship with 166 points

Dan Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) led a small Augustana swimming squad to a sixth place finish (166 points) at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship in Kenosha, Wisconsin on February 9-11.  He had several strong races for the Vikings, swimming to a ninth place finish in both the 50 freestyle (:22.38) and the 100 butterfly (:43.32) and placing 10th in the 100 freestyle (:49.39).

Betz was also part of two successful relay teams.  The 200 freestyle relay team of Sean Stanley (Warren Township HS, Grayslake, Ill.), Jordan Voigt (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), Carl Jannusch (Maine West HS, Des Plaines, Ill.), and Betz finished fifth in 1:30.81.  The foursome also combined for a sixth place finish in both the 200 medley relay (1:45.41) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.01).  Ian Gustafson (Rockford Jefferson HS, Cherry Valley, Ill.) joined with Betz, Jannusch, and Stanley for the 800 freestyle relay.  The group swam a 7:48.05 and took home fifth place.

The other top performances for Augustana at the CCIW Championship came from Jannusch and Voigt.  Both swimmers had 11th place finishes as Jannusch swam a 1:49.42 in the 200 freestyle and Voigt raced to a 2:26.01 in the 200 breaststroke.

One of the best performances of the year for the Vikings came at the Eureka Invitational on January 28.  Augustana finished second in the four team field, outscoring both Knox and Eureka.  Dan Betz was also named “Most Outstanding Swimmer” as he led the Vikings with three individual victories.  Betz scored wins in the 100 butterfly (:55.44), 50 freestyle (:23.24), and 200 butterfly (2:12.77).  Voigt and Jannusch also recorded first place finishes.  Voigt outdistanced the competition and won the 1000 freestyle in 11:56.02 and Jannusch sprinted to victory in the 100 freestyle, finishing in :51.64.

Betz and Jannusch found their way onto the top ten times list in 2006.  Betz finished the season with the fourth best time in the 100 butterfly (:53.32) and the ninth best time in both the 50 (:22.38) and 100 freestyle (:49.21).  Jannusch now has the 10th best time in the 200 freestyle with his 1:49.42.

The Vikings finished the season with a 1-4 dual meet record.  The swimmers defeated Knox in the opening meet 56-27.  Augustana also defeated Knox in the Grinnell Invitational on January 13-14.  After two seasons, head coach Jake Anderson now has a 4-7 dual meet record with the men’s swimming team.
