Vikings win first CCIW title in 10 years and finish with 20-5 overall record; Drew Carstens named first team NCAA Division III All-American

The CCIW title is the ninth in men’s basketball history at Augustana. The other league titles owned by the Vikings came in 1963, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1981, 1982 and 1983.

After a 10-15 record (4-10 in the CCIW) in 1999-00, this group saw a marked improvement as sophomores with a 17-8 overall record and a 9-5 ledger in the league. As juniors they helped the Vikings to another 17-8/9-5 year and that set the tone for this season’s 20-5/11-3 mark. In four years they helped the Blue & Gold compile a record of 64-36 (.640) overall and 33-23 (.589) in the CCIW.

Giovanine is in his fourth year at Augustana and in his first three seasons he compiled a record of 44-31. His first team was 10-15 overall and 4-10 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin while his last two seasons put together back to back 17-8 overall records and 9-5 marks in league play. As a team the Vikings led the CCIW in scoring offense with an average of 76.6 points per game (1072 in 14 games), scoring margin at 9.8 per game (76.6 to 66.8), rebounding at 39.2 per game (549 in 14 games), rebounding margin at 6.4 per game (39.2 for as opposed to 32.8 against), field goal percentage defense at .402 (311 of 773) and blocked shots at 3.50 per game (49 in 14 games).
