2007-08 Women's Golf Review
Augustana women’s golf team places fourth at CCIW Championships behind third place individual finish from Rachel Gahn; Gahn’s individual championship at the Hickory Point Open highlights spring season
The Augustana women’s golf team finished its fall season with a solid performance at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships. The Vikings finished fourth at the event on Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6 at the Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur, Illinois by shooting a team score of 678.
Head coach Ron Standley’s Vikings competed in 10 events in the fall, winning in record fashion at the Augustana Fall Classic. Augustana made history at the 14 team invitational on Thursday, September 6 in Davenport, Iowa. Rachel Gahn (Edina HS, Edina, Minn.), sophomore Danielle Detelich (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Heather Arizpe (Conant HS, Schaumburg, Ill.), and Megan McNulty (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) combined to shoot a team score of 323. The score is a new school record, eclipsing the old mark of 324 set on September 9, 2006 by Gahn (78), Detelich (80), Arizpe (83) and Abbi Johnson (83). Gahn led the way with a 75, claiming medalist honors in the 74 player field. Detelich fired an 82 and tied for fifth place. Arizpe and McNulty each shot 83 and finished in a tie for ninth.
Augustana finished in second place at the Mount Mercy Invitational and the Augustana Triangular. The team was third in the Monmouth Invitational and fourth in the Knox College Invitational.
The Vikings finished up the 2007-08 season with a pair of spring events, taking seventh at the Augustana Invitational and fourth at the Hickory Point Open. In the latter event, Gahn shot a two-round 165 to capture individual honors for the third time this season, adding to her fall wins at the Augustana Triangular and Fall Classic. Arizpe also showed well at Hickory Point, with a 180 (94 86) to earn a seventh place tie.
Gahn, a junior, led the squad with a scoring average of 82.4 strokes. She finished with 1,319 strokes over 16 rounds of action and led the Vikings with a third place individual finish at the CCIW Championships, firing rounds of 76 and 79, finishing only three shots behind the medalist. Her lowest round of the season came on September 6 when she shot a 75 to lead the Vikings to a win at the Augustana Fall Classic. Gahn was the medalist that day, and also won an individual title at the Augustana Triangular on September 1. She concluded the fall by finishing in the top five in half of the team’s ten events. Gahn was a top ten finisher 10 out of 12 meets in 2007-08. Her individual win at the Hickory Point Open highlighted the 2008 spring season.
For the year, Augustana compiled an 85-52 record and was ranked 48th in Division III by Golfstat.com. Both Gahn and Arizpe, a junior, earned Viking post season awards, with Gahn taking Most Valuable Player honors for the third year in a row and Arizpe sharing Most Inspirational with junior Shasta Ketcham (Danville HS, Danville, Iowa). Arizpe was third on the team with an 88.1 stroke average and was also chosen as team captain. Ketcham also shared Most Improved Player with sophomore Katy Mascheri (Hersey HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.). Ketcham finished the year averaging 106.9 strokes over seven rounds and Mascheri had a 101.7 average over 14 rounds. Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) was chosen Most Valuable Freshman. Berens averaged 96.2 strokes in 13 rounds of competition.
Sophomores Detelich and McNulty were solid for the Vikings as well. Detelich compiled an average of 84.5 strokes over four rounds in the fall season and McNulty averaged 88.8 strokes in 13 rounds of play.
Gahn also earned Academic All-District honors from ESPN the Magazine.
