2000-01 AUGUSTANA WOMEN'S GOLF REVIEW
VIKINGS FINISH 2000 SEASON WITH FIFTH PLACE FINISH IN CCIW
The Augustana Vikings 2000 women's golf team fought through a season marked with an injury to its number one player by finishing fifth at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament on October 13-14 at the Pontiac Elks Club in Pontiac, Illinois. Through the first three matches of the season, second year head coach Ron Standley had a promising find in freshman Josefin Holmberg (Oregon Davis HS in Walkerton, IN - Hallsburg, Sweden).
Holmberg carried an average of 82.3 in the first three matches and she won the St. Ambrose Triangular in her first collegiate match back on August 31 when she shot an 82. She followed that with an 81 against Monmouth in a dual meet where she was the individual medallist and an 84 in the Cornell Invitational, which was good enough for fifth place. Unfortunately for the Vikings, that would be the last match Holmberg would play as a back injury sidelined her for the rest of the season.
Without Holmberg at number one, Standley patched his team together as best he could. Rachel Saplis (Coon Rapids HS, Coon Rapids, MN) stepped in and became the number one player. She averaged 94.6 strokes over 10 rounds and she finished 11th in the CCIW tournament for the best finish by an Augustana player.
The 2000 season was a historic one for senior Michelle Bauer (Mendota HS, Mendota, IL) as she became the first four year letterwinner in school history. Bauer averaged 96.4 strokes through 10 rounds. Jennifer Sloggett (Harlem HS, Machesney Park, IL) also averaged under 100 with an average of 98.1 through eight rounds. Sloggett missed the CCIW tournament because of a prior commitment.
