2005-06 WOMEN’S GOLF REVIEW

Michelle Coble earns all-conference honors as Vikings place fourth in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament; Augustana finishes fall season ranked 40th in NCAA Division III

With senior Michelle Coble (Peru St. Bede Academy, DePue, Ill.) leading the way, the Augustana Vikings women’s golf team enjoyed a successful fall season in 2005. Head coach Ron Standley’s club ended the campaign with a 54-40 record against NCAA Division III teams and was ranked 40th in the nation at the conclusion of the fall. As has been the case since Standley took over prior to the 1999-00 season, the Vikings once again played a top-notch schedule. They were 67-60 overall, which includes matches against non-NCAA Division III institutions (Divisions I, II and NAIA).

Coble wound up as the team leader in stroke average as she played in 12 rounds and counted 1,045 strokes for an average of 87.1 per round. She was in the top five in two tournaments, top ten in four and top 20 in seven. She shot a two day total of 178 (86-92) in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament on October 7-8 at the Pontiac Elks Club in Pontiac, Illinois. That was good enough for seventh place in the individual standings and earned her a spot on the all-conference team.

The Vikings placed fourth in the CCIW tournament with a two day total of 735 (379 & 356). Illinois Wesleyan won the event for the fourth year in a row with a score of 674 (337 & 337) with Carthage taking second at 720 (358 & 362) and Wheaton grabbing third with a total of 729 (369 & 360). Millikin was fifth at 738 (385 & 353) and North Central placed sixth at 802 (412 & 390). Elmhurst and North Park did not field full teams for the meet.

Katie Clancy (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was the second Augustana finisher with a two day total of 185 (97 & 88), which placed her 15th. Heather Arizpe (Conant HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) also finished 15th with a 185 (99 & 86). Rachel Gahn (Edina HS, Edina, Minn.) placed 22nd with a 190 (100 & 90), Brittany Hildebrand (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) took 23rd with a 191 (97 & 94) and Anne Young (St. Viator HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) was 29th with a 201 (101 & 100).

The Vikings are now finished with the fall portion of the 2005-06 schedule. Coble led the team with an average of 87.1 over 12 rounds of play (1,045 strokes) with a low score of 78. She recorded seven top 20 finishes on the year, including a pair in the top five of two tournaments. She was second at the Kohawk Invitational on September 3 and was fourth at the North Central Invitational on September 20. Gahn was right behind Coble with an 87.8 average as she had 1,054 strokes in 12 rounds with a low score of 83. She placed in the top 20 in eight of the 10 tournaments she played in with four top 10 finishes. She won the North Central Invitational on September 20 with a score of 88.

Clancy posted an 89.5 average with 985 strokes in 11 rounds with a low score of 82. She was in the top 20 six times with a trio of top 10 finishes and one in the top five. Arizpe averaged 90.2 with 1,082 strokes in 12 rounds and had four top 20 finishes with her best being a third at the North Central Invitational.

The Vikings won the North Central Invitational in Naperville, Illinois on September 20 with a score of 363 and placed third in the Fighting Bee Classic in Davenport, Iowa on September 24.
