2011 Season - Rindone sets school record, Vikings win five events

Sophomore Alex Rindone set a new school record in the 300 at the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth on Saturday, January 22.

Augustana won a total of five events at the Midwest Invitational on Saturday, January 22 in Monmouth, Illinois. The Vikings placed in every event in the meet and no team scores were kept. Sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) established a new school record in the 300 at the Midwest Invitational. Veteran head coach Paul Olsen also took some athletes to the Iowa State Open in Ames, Iowa on Friday, January 21.

Rindone did not win the 300 but his second place time of :35.74 was good enough to erase the previous school record of :35.87 set by Evan Holschbach in 2009.

Senior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won the long jump with a leap of 22’ 8 ½”. This came just a week after he established a new school record in the triple jump at the Sol Butler Invitational in Dubuque on January 15. Junior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) won the 55 hurdles in :08.03 and sophomore Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) took first in the mile with a time of 4:22.15.

The distance medley team of senior Tim Faith-Rosley (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.), sophomore Ryan Brummet (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.), junior Pat Manser (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and freshman Alex Stockwell (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) won with a time of 11:23.24. The 1600 relay unit of freshman Matt Dickey (Benet Academy, Downers Grove, Ill.), senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), freshman Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) and sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) recorded a winning time of 3:25.50.

In addition to setting a new school record and taking second in the 300, Rindone also placed second in the 55 meter dash with a time of :06.69. Freshman Luke Chvatal (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) was second in the 600 with a time of 1:25.77 and senior Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) took second in the 800 in 1:59.84.

The 800 meter relay team of freshman Jay Graffanga (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.), Dickey, sophomore Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) and senior Dane Burmeister (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) took third in 1:53.58. Freshman Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) was third in the 800 in 2:01.57 and Patton finished third in the 300 in :36.15. Senior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) took third in the long jump with a leap of 21’ 0 ½” and freshman Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) cleared 6’ 5” to take third in the high jump. Senior Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) was third in the 400 with a time of :51.89.
 
Sophomore Patrick Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) took fourth in the 55 hurdles (:08.34), Wood was fourth in the 300 (:36.65) and Graffanga placed fourth in the 200 (:23.30). Freshman Scott Pospisil (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) had a leap of 41’ 5” to take fourth in the triple jump. Freshman Justin Davidson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) cleared 5’ 11 ½” to take fourth in the high jump and junior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) tossed the weight 52’ 5 ¼” and was fourth.

Freshman Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) placed fifth in the mile with a time of 4:35.35. Sophomore Dennis O’Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) took sixth in 4:36.7, Sophomore Kyle McNicholas (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was seventh in 4:36.71 and sophomore Tommie Harris (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) was eighth in 4:38.09.

Senior Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) finished fifth in the 55 hurdles in :08.52 and senior Don Anciaux (Iowa City HS, Iowa City, Iowa) took sixth in :08.59. Sophomore Jacob O’Rourke (Davenport Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) finished fifth in the 55 meter dash in :06.78 with Graffanga taking sixth (:06.80) and sophomore Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) grabbing seventh in :06.83.

Sophomore Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 13’ 11 ¼” to take fifth in the pole vault. Senior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) placed sixth and junior A.J. Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) took seventh as both also cleared 13’ 11 ¼”.

Junior Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) was sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 47’ 1”. Christensen was sixth in the shot with a toss of 44’ 9 ¾” and sophomore Kevin Macek (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) took eighth with a mark of 43’ 3 ¼”. Freshman Jared Spivey (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 40’ 8 ¾”.
Mays took fifth in the 200 (:23.43) and O’Rourke was eighth (:24.01). Zahrobsky placed seventh in the 300 with a time of :37.09 and freshman Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) was seventh in the 800 in 2:04.67. Freshman Trevor Raupp (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 20’1”. Senior Eric Erspamer (Bartlett HS, Bartlett, Ill.) finished seventh in the 5000 in 16:48.54.

The Vikings sent a small contingent to Iowa State on Friday, January 21. Senior All-American Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) ran a season’s best 14:56 in the 5000 and the distance medley team of senior Brad Keating (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.), Wood, senior Greg Weigand (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and junior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) recorded a fine time of 10:15.

Augustana will compete at the Wartburg Invitational on Saturday, January 29 in Waverly, Iowa.
