2001 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW

CHRISTINA GAMZER NAMED MVP FOR AUGUSTANA WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM

Senior Christina Gamzer (Whitnall HS, Greenfield, WI) has been named as the Most Valuable Performer for the 2001 Augustana women's cross country team by a vote of her teammates. Gamzer, the top finisher for the Vikings in six meets this past fall, was a consistent performer all season long. She finished fourth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin on October 27 in her best outing of the year. Gamzer won the Coe dual meet on September 22.

Augustana, under the direction of veteran co-head coaches Fred Whiteside and Doug Sand, placed third in the CCIW with 61 points, behind the 46 compiled by champion Elmhurst and the 52 of runner-up Wheaton. The Vikings won the Loras Invitational and were second in the North Park Invitational. At the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional the Blue & Gold placed ninth among 33 teams.

The season began with the Vikings needing to replace four top seven runners from the 2000 campaign. Gamzer stepped up as the number one runner and she was a constant factor in most of the meets. 

The Most Improved Runner award was shared by senior Shannon Everett (Elgin Larkin HS, Elgin, IL) and sophomore Annie Livengood (Jacobs HS, Lake-in-the-Hills, IL). Livengood was also given the Viking Award for spirit and determination, actually sharing it with fellow sophomores Jennifer Smith (Davenport North HS, Parkview, IA) and Liz Yemm (Sterling HS, Sterling, IL). The Most Valuable Freshman honor went to Erin Marciniec (Benet Academy, Plainfield, IL).

NCAA DIVISION III COACHES ASSOCIATION ALL ACADEMIC: Entire team was honored with 3.29 cumulative grade point average; Erin Fiene and Erin Marciniec were named to the individual team.
