2000 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW

LAUREN HABENICHT & DEVONE SMITH SHARE MVP HONORS FOR VIKINGS

Senior Lauren Habenicht (Lemont HS, Lemont, IL) and junior Devone Smith (Joliet West HS, Shorewood, IL) shared the Most Valuable Runner award for the 2000 Augustana Vikings women's cross country team. Habenicht, the team's Most Improved Runner in 1999 during her junior year, was tremendous down the stretch for the charges of co-head coaches Fred Whiteside and Doug Sand. She was the top finisher for the Vikings in a total of six meets during the year, including the last three.

She was sixth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship that was held at Indian Trails Academy in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Her performance helped Augustana finish second in the team race with 52 points as Elmhurst won its first ever CCIW title with 34 points and North Central was third with 74. Habenicht had a tremendous race in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional two weeks later when she was 29th and spearheaded a team effort that saw the Blue & Gold place eighth with 202 points.

Earlier in the year, Habenicht was second in the Loras Invitational and seventh in the North Central Invitational. She was also the team's top finisher in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational and Wisconsin-LaCrosse Invitational.

Smith led the team at the Woody Gremo Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska back on September 16 with a 48th place finish and was also the number one runner in the Border States Invitational on October 7. She was just four seconds behind Habenicht in the CCIW meet with a seventh place finish in a time of 18:57. She also took second in the Augustana Open and fifth at the Loras Invitational.

Megan Carlson (Stillman Valley HS, Stillman Valley, IL) and Jennifer Smith (Davenport North HS, Park View, IA) shared the Most Valuable Freshman honor.

The Most Improved Runners awards went to the trio of Emily Hinds (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Naperville, IL), Megan Wadington (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, IL) and Allison Garrett (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, IA). Erin Fiene (York HS, Elmhurst, IL) claimed the Erica Vortman Viking Spirit Award. The captains-elect for the 2001 season are Devone Smith (Joliet West HS, Shorewood, IL), Amanda Esarey (Havana HS, Havana, IL) and Christina Gamzer (Whitnall HS, Greenfield, WI).

It was a tremendous year for the Vikings as they won the North Central Invitational and placed second in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational and the Loras Invitational as well as the CCIW championship. They also had fine showings in two meets that featured NCAA Division I and II teams - the Woody Gremo Invitational and Border States Championship in St. Louis, Missouri. At the Woody Gremo meet, Augustana was sixth of 26 teams with 195 points as Central Missouri won the team title with 78 points. In the 32 team Border States Championship the Vikings placed eighth as Central Missouri captured the championship with 87 points and Truman State was second with 133.
