2010 MEN'S GOLF REVIEW

The Augustana men’s golf team finished the 2009-10 campaign with an overall record of 57-71 after competing in 10 events throughout the season. The team’s best showing was a first place performance at the Vike-Fire-Scott Triangular last fall. The team also placed fifth out of 16 teams at the Prairie Fire Classic in the fall and ninth out of 19 squads at the Scot-Fire Classic this spring.
Junior Kyle Weigand (Leyden HS, Franklin Park, Ill.) turned in an impressive 80.2 scoring average with a total of 1,364 strokes in 17 rounds of action. His lowest score of 73 came at the Vike-Fire-Scot Triangular where he took medalist honors in the 30 player field. Weigand was the lone Viking to earn a top individual finish during the season. He also tied for 13 th in an 85 player field at the Prairie Fire Classic and tied for 33 rd out of 99 golfers at the Scot-Fire Classic to close out the year.
Junior Phil Litchfield (Benet Academy, Darien, Ill.) finished close behind Weigand with an 80.8 scoring average. He competed in 18 rounds and took 1,455 strokes. Litchfield had a season best round of 71 in the final round of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship Meet, placing 20 th overall and second for the Vikings. His score of 71 was the lowest score of the season for the entire squad. Litchfield tied for 16 th out of 74 players at the Cress Creek Invitational and finished in a tie for 18 th at the 99 player Scott-Fire Classic.
Sophomore Jordan Henry (Erie HS, Erie, Ill.) closed out the season with an 81.6 scoring average. He fired 1,305 shots in 16 rounds on the course. Henry’s season low round also came in the final round of the CCIW Championship Meet when he shot a 73 and tied for 15 th to lead Augustana. Two rounds in the 70’s at the Prairie Fire Classic gave him a tie for 19 th in the 85 player event in one of his other top performances of the year.
Freshman Jeff Paustian (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) turned in a strong year in his first campaign with the Blue & Gold. He tallied a scoring average of 81.9 after hitting 1,393 shots in 17 rounds of play. Paustian’s best round of the season was a 74 that he shot in the opening round of the Augustana Invitational this spring on his way to a tie for 16 th in the 74 player field. He also tied for sixth out of 30 golfers at the Vike-Fire-Scot Triangular and finished in a tie for 33 rd in a 124 player field at the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Invitational.
Junior Ted Keopple (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) completed the year with an 82.1 scoring average after shooting 1,067 shots in 13 rounds of action. He opened the season on fire with a pair of 76’s, finishing in a tie for 30 th at the 109 player Duane Chaney Invitational and in a tie for second at the Vike-Fire-Scot Triangular. His best score of the spring was a 77 in the first round of the Augustana Invitational. Keopple went on to place in a tie for 29 th out of 78 players.
Freshman Jon Grchan (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) finished up a fine first year at Augustana with an 83.2 scoring average. He made 1,165 shots in 14 rounds and had a low score of 75. His 75 came in the first round of the Augustana Invitational and eventually led to a 21 st place showing in the 78 player event. He also tied for 11 th out of 30 golfers at the Vike-Fire-Scot Triangular.
Junior Cole Wells (Tri-Valley HS, Downs, Ill.) concluded his season with an 83.9 scoring average. He competed in 16 rounds and took 1,342 strokes. Wells’ best round was a 76 that he fired in the final round of the season at the Scot-Fire Classic, finishing in a tie for 53 rd out of 99 golfers. His best finish was a tie for sixth out of 30 players at the Vike-Fire-Scot Triangular last fall.
Weigand and Litchfield shared the team’s Most Valuable Player award by a vote of their teammates at the conclusion of the season. Keopple was the Most Improved Player and Paustian was the Newcomer of the Year.
