2011 Season - Vikings dominate Sol Butler Classic

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Before the 2011 men's track & field season began, veteran Augustana head track & field coach Paul Olsen thought that his team would once again be "pretty good". After watching his Vikings perform at the Sol Butler Classic on Saturday, January 15 at A.Y. McDonald Indoor Track on the University of Dubuque campus, he might want to upgrade his assessment a bit.
Although it was just the first meet of the season, Olsen's Vikings served notice that they are as deep and talented as ever. Augustana won a total of 16 events, set four meet records, were under the meet record in another event that the Vikings did not win and had a monster performance from senior triple jump standout Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.).
On a day where there were standout performances every time an event was contested, Zeunik's stood out even amongst the onslaught of his teammates winning all but three events. He uncorked a leap of 48' 9" to win the triple jump. In the process he broke both the Augustana indoor and all-time (outdoor) school records, broke his own meet record and qualified automatically for the NCAA Division III indoor national championships. For good measure, he also added a second place finish in the long jump with a mark of 21' 1 ¼".
Besides Zeunik's performance in the triple jump, the Vikings also established new meet records in the mile, 4x200 relay and the open 600. Senior Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) won the mile in 4:23.39, shattering the old meet record of 4:33.30. In the mile, the Vikings also grabbed five other places in the top eight. Junior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) was second in 4:25.93 with junior Nick Danzy (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) taking third (4:28.21) and freshman Kyle Meyer (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) nailing fourth (4:28.94). Tizsa, Danzy and Meyer were all under the existing meet record. Freshman Andrew Allabastro (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) placed sixth in 4:37.30 and senior Tim Faith-Rosley (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) was eighth in 4:40.62.
The 4x200 relay team of senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.), sophomore Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.), sophomore Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) and sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) won with a time of 1:31.75 and that broke the old meet record of 1:34.75.
Freshman Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) accounted for the fourth meet record when he won the 600 in 1:22.94, easily erasing the old mark of 1:24.05. Sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and senior Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) were both under the previous record as well. Patton was second in 1:23.40 and Langslet third in 1:23.76. Senior Greg Weigand (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) took fourth in 1:24.09, just above the old mark.
