2010-11 Season - Vikings move to eighth in NCAA ranking

Augustana's 13-0 start has helped the Vikings jump all the way to eighth in the latest NCAA Division III national poll.

Augustana opened the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin schedule with a pair of victories last week and jumped one spot in the NCAA Division III national rankings. The Vikings of veteran head coach Grey Giovanine are now eighth in the D3hoops.com poll with 443 points.

A week ago Augustana was ninth with 427 points but wins over North Park (62-49 on January 5 in Chicago) and Elmhurst (67-45 on January 8 at home) provided the impetus for a move in both points and ranking. The Vikings are now 13-0 overall and are one of just eight undefeated teams left in NCAA Division III.

The 13-0 start is the best for the Blue & Gold since the 1935-36 team, coached by H.V. “Shorty” Almquist, went 16-0 before finally losing a game.

Augustana will be severely tested this week with two CCIW contests. The Vikings will host Wheaton (10-3 overall and 1-1 in the CCIW) on Wednesday, January 12 at home and then will head to Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday, January 15 for a game with Carthage (8-5 overall and 1-1 in the CCIW). Both Carthage and Wheaton were ranked during the early portion of the 2010-11 campaign but each has fallen out of the top 25. Wheaton received 12 points this week and Carthage garnered two points in the weekly ranking.

A fixture in the national polls since Giovanine became head coach prior to 1999-00, the Vikings have now been ranked in the top 25 of the D3hoops.com poll for 78 weeks (out of a possible 167) since the website began doing the ranking.
