2010-11 Season - Thunder scoring run costs Vikings

Elizabeth Phillips scored 12 points in Augustana's 71-57 loss to Wheaton. She finished 5-8 from the floor, including 1-2 from beyond the three point arc. Phillips also converted her only free throw, grabbed two rebounds, and made one block for the Vikings.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A scoring drought midway through the second half proved costly for the Augustana women’s basketball team in a 71-57 loss to Wheaton on Tuesday, January 11 in Rock Island, Illinois.  The Vikings trailed 32-29 at the 17:13 mark of the second half and were still within six points of the lead (40-34) at the 13:40 mark before being outscored 11-0 in just over three minutes to fall behind 51-34 midway through the final period of play.  The Blue & Gold closed within 12 points on two different occasions, but could not complete the rally, falling to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.
Augustana jumped out to a 6-2 edge early in the game with baskets from senior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.), junior Elizabeth Phillips (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.), and freshman Jessica Baids (West Chicago HS, Carol Stream, Ill.).  Two of the three early scores came on offensive rebounds in the opening four minutes of action.  The Blue & Gold would finish with 19 offensive rebounds.
The Vikings later stayed in front by a single point on a jumper from Phillips at the 14:21 mark and again on a bucket from freshman Molly Etheridge (Normal Community HS, Bloomington, Ill.) with 13:18 to play in the first half.  Augustana held its final lead at the 12:19 mark of the opening stanza when Fox buried a jumper to make the score 12-11.
Wheaton responded with a 7-0 spurt to move ahead, 18-12, but a pair of trifectas from Fox knotted the game at 18-18 with 8:13 remaining.  Fox would finish the night with 19 points, leading all scorers for the second straight contest after posting 22 over the weekend against Elmhurst.  The game was tied again at 27-27 late in the half, but the Thunder tallied the final five points to take a 32-27 edge into intermission.
Both teams were scoreless after coming out of the break, but things seemed to be heading in the right direction when junior Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) connected on a jumper to cut the deficit to three (32-29).  However, Wheaton responded with the critical run of the night, pushing the lead into double digits (44-34) at the 12:34 mark and eventually to 17 points (51-34) with an 11-0 spurt, never looking back on its way to the road victory.
Fox was joined in double figures by Phillips, who finished with 12 points.  Fox and junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) each snared nine rebounds, helping Augustana finish with a slight 44-43 edge on the glass.  Etheridge contributed nine points off the bench.
The Vikings are back on the road to face Carthage on Saturday, January 15 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
