2000 Men's Cross Country Review
JUNIOR RUDY KOVACHEVICH SELECTED AS MVP FOR AUGUSTANA COLLEGE MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY IN THE YEAR 2000
Junior Rudy Kovachevich (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, IL) parlayed a steady season into an award winning one as he was selected as the Most Valuable Performer for the 2000 Augustana Vikings men's cross country team. Veteran head coach Paul Olsen made the announcement at the team's annual awards dinner.
Kovachevich, a three year letterwinner, was the Vikings number one runner in three meets this past year and he was in the top seven every time out. His best performance came at the Luther College All-American Invitational in Decorah, Iowa on September 9 when he finished sixth to lead the Vikings to a third place finish in the team race. Kovachevich was 40th at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 6 and placed 14th in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on October 28 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Randy Bill (Bureau Valley HS, Buda, IL) was tabbed as the Most Valuable Freshman. Bill was the top Augustana finisher at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in Colfax, Wisconsin on November 11. He also had an 18th place finish in the CCIW championship meet.
Senior Matt Delagrange (Waubonsie Valley HS, North Aurora, IL) was chosen as the Most Improved Runner and the Lincoln Smith Most Inspirational Award went to senior Chris Sweet (Metamora HS, Metamora, IL).
Kovachevich and fellow junior Craig Lawrence (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, IL) were named as the captains-elect for the 2001 season.
Augustana was third in the Luther All-American Invitational and third at the Les Duke Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa behind the seventh place individual finish of senior Brian Jackson (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, IA). The Vikings were fifth at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational and placed third in the CCIW meet.
